Nice campground with big sites. It was busy end of January and lots of children...but there is much to do for them. The location is perfect. Not far from Matakana, near the Sawmill Brewery, a short drive away. The shower was unisex and separated from the toilet which is very good. Water pressure and temperature perfect. Huge kitchen and barbecue available, but no pots or pans, so bring your own but you can rent if you need them.

Clean and tidy, the dining room was welcoming and warm, we appreciated it in winter time. Camp was almost empty and very well located to reach Goat Island. Do not miss the Marine Discovery Center located in front of Goat Island, very interesting to discover the sea life and what researcher are doing there.

Very nice camping at a bay with play ground. At low tide there is almost no sea water, but we loved that. It is nice walking and looking for little fish, crab, etc. At high tide we could go for a swim with no waves, very lovely for little children. Everything was very clean and maintained. Very good cooking area, but no pots, pans, cutlery etc. At sea side there is some shadow, other sides (on grass) have no shadow at all. We paid 52 NZD for 2 adults and 2 small kids at sea side. Nice camp site to go snorkeling at Goat Island.

Ask for a waterfront site they're lovely. Very spacious sites. The facilities are nice and clean. 5 minutes good and hot shower for 50ct, that's fine. Paid NZD 42 for one night. Seems to be the regular price to pay for something good in this part of NZ. Half of the campsite seemed to be more or less permanent campervans with tents attached, but they were grouped at one site of the campground. Friendly campground.

Approach from Pakiri involves a short stretch of poor and highly unsealed road. Highly organised and very well appointed site. Excellent facilities, especially for families. Kitchens and wash facilities all scrupulously clean. Stayed on waterfront site for $22 per person. Swimming from waterfront safe and good at high tide but inlet empties fast as tide recedes! Rule list looks intimidating but management staff were all pleasant and helpful.

We stayed, along with our friends (it was their first time a caravan), for one night. We have been coming to the camp for a few years and normally thoroughly enjoy it. However, there seem to be more and more rules, ie. check-in from 2pm which is crazy, especially for a powered site. No visitors till noon, and they must leave by 8.00pm, yet curfew isn't till 10.00pm. The other disappointing issue for us that time was that although we had booked 2 sites side by side, we were to find on arrival that our friends had been relegated to the back row. Luckily after some re-jigging, they were able to camp beside us - this shouldn't happen. The .50c for the showers still causes a few hiccups. Should be changed to a timer, like fellow Miranda Holiday Park. These rules have put us off the camp temporarily which is a real shame as it was a favourite of our's. Please reconsider check-in times etc. However, still like the camp and the staff are great.

Whangateau Holiday Park responds:

Hello Liz, We are very sorry your stay with us was not the best it could have been. Our rules have been in place for a long time now but we do have to be extra vigilant during our busier periods. Our office closes at 8pm and this makes it very difficult to know whether "visitors" have vacated or plan to stay the night. As we are a family park we do have a lot of families stay with young children who are generally in bed by this time. The check out and check in rules are fairly standard throughout most holiday parks but we do offer early check in or late check out for our camp sites as long as this has been arranged with our office. We apologise for the small error with your friends being separated and are happy we were easily able to rectify this for you. We do hope your next stay with us will be a far better experience and we ask if you have any concerns at the time of staying that you speak with the Park Assistant in the office at the time so they can do whatever they can to ensure your stay with us is satifactory.
Regards, the team @ Whangateau

The camp would rate as one of the very best we have stayed in throughout New Zealand. Location, Staff and facilities were exellent. We really enjoyed taking just a few steps from the caravan into the water for a swim!
This was our first stay but we will most certainly will be back at the first opportunity.

Once again we had a most enjoyable stay in our Motorhome, this is a very well managed camp ground.
Showers were disappointing as the 50c always ran out long before the due time. It would also be excellent to have a vanity mirror in the ladies shower area instead of having to trek around to the toilets to finish dressing.
But all in all we lovde it and will certainly return.

Easy to find , friendly staff at front gate. Facilities were great except the 50c shower caused a few issues when they didnt work how they were suposed to, but soon sorted by staff. Fruit and Vege shop onsite twice a week was a great idea, Awesum safe swim and rec area very close by to play ball and kids to let loose. Lock down of front gate was an issue for other campers who went to the movies in Matakana at night but it didnt bother us and the Reception made it very clear that LOCKED meant no getting vehicles in or out after 10.30- no probs once you know the rules.Camp sites were a bit cosy so would pay to mention if booking if you have a BIG tent and extras to setup . Great holiday will be back as it was so close to all great things up north.

The facilities at whangateau is amazing, clean at all times, staff at front desk were always helpful. Our caravan experience was awesome, we had a waterfront caravan the kids loved it. Our 1st night at the park our neighbours were having a very very loud party, music was loud and there was alot of noise, party finished at 3am, we didnt mind the noise, however the next day and the next few nights that folllowed we would be playing charades with the kids till midnight and we would get a visit every night by park staff to keep it down, we were never loud and always considered other families, there seems to be one rule for some visitors and another set of rules for others, felt like we were at school camp being told off by our school teacher.

My husband and I visited in our 7 metre Nissan Bus to the Whangateau Holiday Park. Wow!! what a change in the place (we visited and had many tent holidays here 25 years ago, with family). The faciilites were amazing, clean and well cared for, from early in the morning until late in the evening. Plenty of hot showers, clean kitchen if you needed and room to move between each site. We stayed on the waters edge which brought back many memories for us with our children many years ago. If you want to stop over for one night or several - this is the Holiday Park to be at. Plenty to do and visit and the Managers were most helpful. We will be back...
We would and will recommend this Holiday Park to friends and people of the Motor assoc who have Campervans, Buses, etc...... We will be back.....

If you stay at the waterfront it would be a great campsite, however our spot was in the third row. On this campsite there is absolutely no privacy, no trees, no nothing, so a very boring spot. If you like to camp in nature, like us, this is not your campsite. Kitchen and toilets are fine, however strange that the radio is always on, even at 6am. We stayed here for a week Jan/Feb 2013.
Our experience for the week recently was fantastic.
A well run clean camp & can thoroughly recommend.
Our elderely mother stayed in an ensuited unit. Her accommodation was 'spot on'. The bedding was great clean duvet inner & outer with ample towels - spotless!!
she was so happy.
We found the camp facilities great the communal kitchen was ample so clean. The showers were great, yes 50 cents a shower, but adequate amount of time with ample hot water & good pressure.
The council should be thrilled with how well this camp is run a credit to all the staff. They go out of there way to welcome you & accommodate all requests.
By the way the laundry is fantastic, Brand new washing machines & dryers. Take a holiday & check out for yourselves - No keep it a secret ............ SO HANDY TO AUCKLAND why travel for 3hours!!

An absololutely fantastic location - so safe for the kids. We had a waterfront site and so were able to relax and the watch the kids play in the estuary with little fear as it is relativey shallow (fills fast on the incomming tide tho'). We had booked for 4 nights but only stayed for 2 due to the increasing SE hammering our tent.
Two little comments:
1 - we found the kitchen area/facilities very small for the size of the park - if it was one long kitchen with another sink / microwave.... it would be much better than 2 little cubicles as the queues around mealtimes were pretty decent especially behind those cooking for a large Whanau.
2 - My wife said the 'sanitary bin was overflowing in the ladies' - however this could just have been bad timing!

All in all tho'......a superb time was had by the family ..........so much so that we have booked to return at Easter .....hopefully minus the wind!!! Thankyou!

Have visited this holiday Park on and off over 20 years, last stay being 9 days in January 2013. Enjoyed the upgrades, clean and tidy. We stayed during a windy storm and other campers were very helpful and assisted us in securing our large gazebo over our tent. Camp atmosphere was great. Enjoyed chatting with Stan most evenings on his camp walk about, Bridget is just delightful and always had a smile on her face even at 11pm at night while she was still cleaning toilets. Chris and Nyle were always very helpful and knowledgeable especially when hiring kyaks, fixing blocked showers and keeping dinning areas clean. The only reason we are giving it a '9/10 and not 10/10 is because we cant have our beloved family dog with us. We would like Auckland City Council to change this rule.

We love our experiences at Whangateau. The facilities are always tidy and clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. A very safe place for young children to play and swim. The estuary comes and goes but even when it is out you can walk to the island, over to the inlet or through the reserve and up to the cemetery. Then of course you could always just sit back and enjoy doing nothing. Just a short drive away is various beaches, cafes, weekend markets, and Goat island. We have found that a lot of the visitors have been coming for many years because they love the relaxed environment and have formed many friendships over the years

We attended the campsite for a long weekend and had to cancel half way through due to deteriorating weather conditions. Staff were a little unsympathetic and tended to keep re-emphasising the 'rules' for the campsite... and seemed less concerned about our stay.

The facilities (kitchen, toilets & showers) were below average for what we have seen at other kiwi campsites. showers were coin operated (in this day & age!).

What it lacks in facilities it makes up for in location... The town of Leigh is stunning and the campsite is very well placed to experience both the countryside & the seaside.

Cant rave enough about this holiday park, its not that far from Auckland yet when you get there you feel like you are away from everything. The campsite is so clean, and the staff extremely friendly. Excellent camp kitchens and outdoor eating area. The showers are unisex which I didnt realise but it wasnt a big deal, agree the 50c coin didnt really give you enough of a shower as sometimes it just chewed the money and no water, so we always took a second coin as back up. The playground is fantastic the only thing I would suggest is maybe some sort of sail shade or something for a bit of sun protection as it was scorching in January and maybe some benches nearby so parents can sit down and watch the kids play.
Other than that we loved it and we will definitely return and have been referring everyone we know to go here!

We visited Whangateau in between Christmas and New Year. The camp is well maintained and bathrooms are clean. However we had a terrible experience due to the people in the tent next to us partying until 4.30am! When we complained to the manager the next day the manager dealt with this quickly. However I believe there should have been some sort of patrolling of the campsite late in the evening to stop this - particularly around New Year time. Also surely a giveaway is when a large number of adults book the same site without any children. Unfortunately this has forever tarnished Whangateau for us.

The park is in a fantastic location, the facilities were very clean and the staff were very friendly, however we thought the 50 cents for a shower wasn't too bad until when using the shower. It was extremely dubious if it lasted more than three minutes not the 5 it stated. This left my wife soaking wet and covered in soap. The water just turns off! This means you can't even rinse off in cold water. Not pleasant, especially if you don't have another 50 cent coin. It's not the cheapest of campsites so this left a bit of a sour taste in the mouth. Maybe the park could try and address these issues. It really spoilt what otherwise was a really nice place.

Excellent camp. We have stayed here over the last few years. Great facilities, excellent staff - well-kept grounds, idyllic view. A couple of gripes - there is no discount for NZMCA members, unlike other camps we have stayed at. Second gripe is having to pay 50c per shower. All other camps we have stayed at, showers are free. Sometimes the coins get stuck in the slots. Suggest replacing with timers as opposed to paying. Much more user-friendly.

Otherwise, brilliant camp and we will continue to go there. Thoroughly recommend it.

We had a great time staying at the park for a few days - nice place, nice people. Everything was clean and tidy.

Our only gripe, and it is small, is those annoying push-and-hold water taps. They are hard to use (washing hands properly is virtually impossible) and make a mess because of the epic water pressure. I accept the park needs to conserve water, how about those other type of push taps which stay on for a few seconds?

Otherwise we thoroughly enjoyed the park and would recommend to others. :-)

Whangateau Holiday Park responds:

We appreciate your nice comments. Sorry you found the taps inconvenient and hope you will come see us again.

What a great place to stay! Very clean and well kept facilities, lovely staff with views to die for. The cellphone coverage was also excellent, which is very important to me.
There were boats to hire, which I did, and enjoyed time out on the water. I would happily stay there again and recommend it heartily.

I have visited this Holiday Park now several times and have found ALL of the staff friendly, professional and efficient. They truly make this park and the facilities top notch. They even gave me ideas for activities to do for my boys on a rainy day. This spot is so beautiful and there are many things to do close by, almost spoiled for choice!

I just got back from Whangateau this morning after 6 days away and have already placed another booking!

Thankyou Bridget, Stan, Jackie, Tasha, Scott (and sorry forgot your wifes name... that other awesome cleaner) for making our experience amazing.

This wonderful team and location is what makes the place special.

We were fortunate to be passing this Holiday Park while driving through so when we decided to stay overnight we went back to it. Unfortunately we did not stay more than that one night as we were on a schedule. Stan and Bridget were very helpful to us. We had a lovely unit and were surprised to find a few features there which we would not have expected to find in a Park. Most important to us is cleanliness and we did find it here. Thank you for a warm welcome and a comfortable night.

I have been holidaying at Whangateau for the last 40 years. There have been many changes over this time, the best of which is the current camping ground complex, and the powered camping sites. Although originally camping as a young boy with my parents and family, I now bring my own children and grand-children. It is a beautiful location, with safe harbor and access to the open ocean for sea fishing and boating. Highly recommended. My own children have fallen in love with Whangateau as well, and it has become part of our heritage. Just last week I took a couple of mates with me, in our caravan, for a few days of fishing and kayaking. Now they too are keen to come again.

Hi Team
We would highly recommend this park and have done to friends, family and any one who will listen!
We have now stayed twice and every time found it very relaxing and enjoyable.
Our second booking was difficult for the Holiday Park due to our personal circumstances and they really went the extra mile to accommodate us and they went above and beyond with service.
The service is outstanding friendly the location is wonderful and facilities are A+.
Our family has a small child and it is well suited to for him with the park nearby and the calm tidal water inlet provides lovely views and many chances to swim, explore and play.
The atmosphere if family orientated and we would love to come back again in summer and camp waterfront! Just a special spot and wonderfully close to LOADS of attraction.

Thanks heaps Jo and Dan W

We return frequently to this holiday park. The facilities are in excellent condition, the location is perfect.Although the camp has been full several times we have used it, campers are mindful of others and don't allow noise etc to get too loud. The camp is so handy to Matakana, Warkworth, Leigh, Tawharenui. That's why we keep coming.

After talking our friends into coming with us I was so glad the weather turned out to be awesome.QBW
This park as usual was in pristine condition,I feel that if there was a sealed pathway on the grassed area heading for the showers then the showers would not get so muddy.
Really like the new owners of the campground, very friendly & helpful. Been here a few times now & will be returning.

We have been staying happily at this campsite at Christmas for 5 years now but this year we also went at Easter for the first time. We had a great time! The managers had organised a fun family day on Easter Sunday and everyone had a ball! There were visits from the Easter bunny, Mad Hatter and Alice and family friendly games like sack races & egg and spoon. I love the fact that the campsite is so family friendly and small enough to be safe for the kids.

Cannot rate this lovely camping groud highly enough, spent our third stay there at Easter and everytime we go back there are little thoughtful extras for families with young children. We have stayed in the new units, the waterfront retro caravans and one of the wooden cabins and all have been spotlessly clean and excellent value. The new shower amenities in particular are excellent for young families as they have a nappy changing area, nappy bin, baby bath and even a child size toilet, perfect for when you are toilet training. The communal areas are great and so far everyone we have stayed with at the same time have been really conscientious about cleaning up after themselves. All in all a fantastic place to stay in a lovely area and we will definitely be back for many summers to come.

On arrival we were offered 2 different sites 1 in the back row for $19pp or 1 in the front by the sea for $21pp. We chose the front thinkng that the campng ground was full and we might have a better view. When we got around to the area we realised we were the only 1s there, and we were quit far away from the toilet and kitchen area. I felt like she could have advised us that we were the only 1s camping and suggested a closer site to the facility's as all the sites were vacant. As a mum camping with 3 teenage girls we didnt feel safe that far away and in the dark. If we had of known that there were sites closer we would have chosen that option. She also didnt explain how to get in and out of the camping ground and that we would need a card to get back in. I did tell her that we were going site seeing and we would be in and out so when we got back and couldnt get in there was a new lady on that was a bit annoyed that we had to get her out to let us in when we should have had a card. We had stayed at Orewa camping ground the night before and they reccomended Whangateau and said if we stayed there we would get a 10% discount as they were a sister camping ground but we did'nt get the discount and we were actually charged $21.00 per person. Looking at the price list on line it does'nt add up so i don't know whats going on there. By the time we did leave the new lady was very lovely and helpful and suggested areas to go and see. She would be the reason that we would return if we ever do or, we will carry on up a find elswhere to stay.

Whangateau Holiday Park responds:

Hi Campsalot

I would like to take this opportunity to respond to your review on Rankers about Whangateau Holiday Park.

Unfortunately on the day you arrived there were several waterfront sites that were blocked off due to maintenance. These sites were in desperate need of filling due to flooding in the rainy season. If you felt you wanted to move a little closer to the amenities block we would have happily accommodated the relocation. We often reassign visitors to other sites.

In regards to the 10% discount from our sister park. Orewa Top 10 should have issued you with a voucher so I could process the discount. Unfortunately without the voucher I cannot process any discounts. I have checked all our listings regarding the pricing structures and cannot find the price discrepancy you are referring to. All web fees are set at $21.00 per night per person. We would appreciate it if you could advise us what site has the wrong rates so we can amend them. I’m sorry to hear that your experience in our park wasn’t up to your standards and I trust we will have the opportunity of making amends on your next visit to our park
