The rail trail is flat and straight for slot if the time but close to little river it winds around the lake. Shade from sun and if you are lucky there's no lake flys. You can start in little river and if you stay the campground is 4km from the start. Nice and easy but depends on the wind. Enjoy.

I'm no cyclist but walked the short section between Little River and Caton's Bay. on a hot day, taking care to defer to cyclists, who seemed pleasantly suprised by my courtesy. It is a delightful walk full of wild flowers, shady trees including English Oak and a bird watching heaven. I wish I'd had more time, but it was my last hours in NZ. A lovely area that I'd like to revisit and explore more.
