I rented a campervan for three months and it was a good choice. The campervan was old and a bit dented, but it was doing it's job very well. I was on my own and had enough space, with two people, you probably need to be very cuddly (2 x 60 cm bed ). I never had a breakdown and was be able to drive almost everywhere. Really good fee, too. Highly recommended.

This is tricky because the guys were superb to deal with, the vans are cost effective and everything was easy and efficient.
Unfortunately the first van I got became increasingly hard to start in the mornings (the guys happily switched me to another van and were super good about it). But then sadly the second van was no better, in fact it was worse!
Not really an issue for me 90% of the time as I’m fairly laid back, but when I had to catch ferrys and planes it became a little more irritating.
Didn’t ruin my holiday or anything, just caused me unnecessary concern in my last few day in NZ.
I’d still use them again as I suspect I was just unlucky and they are really nice peeps.

We rented an economy campervan for three weeks. The setup is very comfortable and the mattress is the best we had in 3 weeks, when we had also slept in hostels and B&B. We called the company at least three times and was able to talk to Grant right away. We had a puncture in the tire on Sunday, and it costed $60 extra to have someone coming to a closed tire shop on Sunday. And Grant was OK with covering the extra cost. We spoke to many other travelers who rented campervans from other companies, and most of them are very unhappy with the services. We were more than pleasantly surprised with our experience with Rental car village.

My travel buddy and I rented with Rental Car Village for our 5 weeks road trip through North and South island. The car was very basic however it had everything necessary we needed. It was relatively comfortable but no working radio. A/C was working great. The car drove well however it does slow down while going uphill. We bought the full insurance which is a great idea. My travel buddy got in a car accident and contacted the company. They helped us get a tow truck very quickly and got the car to the closest garage. Luckily they had a car available for us and we only had to pay for the new car's insurance. They were so helpful and and I would highly recommend them to anyone that's looking to rent a camper.

We can absolutely recommend this company! The camper was good, reliable and exactly as described online, the pick up was super fast (with another company in Australia, we had to wait for 3 hours until our campervan was ready...), staff was nice and helpful and everything was just great! Once we had a little problem with the fuse for our fridge, but that was fixed the same day and in a really uncomplicated way ("give us a call when you are in a town and have a little time, we'll find a garage for you. They'll fix it and they send us the bill" - and that's how it was!). Thank you guys for helping to make our NZ holidays awesome!

Rented a campervan for a month January 2017. Very competitive price, the van worked perfect for us, it isn't fast, it isn't flashy (which was our preference), but gets you everywhere. Didn't break down once, looked well maintained. The interior is pretty basic and a bit dated compared to newer campervans. Overall a very good value for money campervan.

We have travelled NZ at least 15 times and used all manner of transport and accommodation, We are in our mid 60's relatively fit and healthy. Husband is 1.9 meters. We travelled the south Island for 3 weeks in March (great weather) in the Micro Campervan . We choose not to hire any of the extras, due to cost plus the space they would take in the car. We supplied our own bedding. Only bring essentials in soft luggage bags to fit comfortably on front seats. We left the water bottle as we prefer to buy water and didn't want any unnecessary items in our limited space. We did not use the tent, due in part to the absence of tent pegs. Do check that you do have everything that is advertised before you leave the yard This experience exceeded our expectations From the numerous emails before we made our final choice to the pleasant staff at Christchurch depot to the car itself. Staff made picking up and dropping off easy transactions. The bed WAS HARD, but we slept on it. It was clean as were the curtains which provided excellent privacy. The car had done 190,000Km, didn't leak oil ,good brakes, mechanically sound and did not falter throughout our 3000 km journey. We would not have felt safe in it driving at 100 km per hour plus. We were able to charge phones, radio reception would have been nice, but hey it meant we had to talk to each other. Stack your phone with sound before you go. This experience is not for everyone, but if you want to save $$ and are not precious you could not do much better.

I was travelling around with the economy campervan for 24 days. overall it was a good experience, but as you get what you pay for the van, compared to the several other ones I got to see on campgrounds, was one of the oldest and offered no frills. what I didn't like in particular was the poor radio, not even offering a CD player and only one speaker was working. gets pretty annoying when you're driving thousands of kilometres. but in the end, the van did its job, it was reliable and brought my safely from christchurch to auckland, which is the main thing!

Booking Process: Super simple. I emailed them to see their availability, they responded quickly and provided a quote right away. I placed a deposit and payed the rest when I got there.
Customer Service: They were friendly and responded to emails in a timely fashion.
Pick-Up/Drop-Off Process: I had the full insurance coverage (which I HIGHLY recommend) so it was simple to pick up the car and drop it off because they didn't need to check for damage.
The Car: We had the camper van. What a dump! I had it for two weeks and traveled all over with my girlfriend. The car worked fine, no break downs or issues, but I did have to constantly check oil, brake fluid and water. The car is old had and over 250,000km on it. It did not have a comfortable layout which meant when you had the bed down there was nothing else to do in it other than lay down. You couldn't do much when you had the bed folded up because there is no storage so everything cm of space was taken up by your clothes/bags, the refrigerator, table/chairs, etc. The campervan is not laid out in an effective way and all the extras just kind of sit there instead of being tucked away or stored away. Also, the front doors did not shut all the way so when you are driving they banged extremely loudly and when it rained all the water would leak into the van. Did we survive? Yeah we made it work. Would I personally spend an extra $300 to get a nicer van next time? Without a doubt.

This is 100% a budget van that offers no storage, quality of van, easy accessibility and function, or size.

My girlfriend and I were looking for a cheap campervan to travel the north and south island in February 2016. After checking some reviews on Rankers we decided to go with the company Rental Car Village. They offered cheap campervans with a very low price and looked very reliable. As we are from the Netherlands, reviews meant a lot for us because normally you would check the cars and company on the spot which wasn't possible for us.

In February 2016 we hired the Economy Campervan at Rental Car Village together with the outdoor folding table with two chairs, fridge and GPS.

We took the zero-excess insurance which I would recommend if you want a easy going holiday. When receiving the van, we wanted to to a quick look around to report any damage. They told us it wasn't neccesary as everything was insured. Upon returning the vehicle, we only handed over the key and they told the same thing :) This made our holiday super relaxed :)

For the next time: I would definitely hire with them again and I will strongly recommend them to every person which is looking for a cheap but nice campervan in Auckland or Christchurch.
In total, we drove for 3.5 weeks 4334kms without any issue. So I don't know how the service is when there is something wrong and you need to call RCV or the AA.

Pros:
Cheap
What you see is what you get
Insurance offer :)
Navigation

Cons:
The engine isnt really made for steep hills, so you are always in the passing lane. Getting passed ;)
Car radio was only working on 1 speaker
Window-wipers and blinking light sticks are swapped ;)
The Auckland office is at the airport area
Seats aren't comfortable for driving long periods
Navigation was outdated
Pullout bed was constantly misaligned after driving

Specs of the van:
Mazda Bongo 2007 (Japanese import)
1.8 Petrol engine
228.000 KM run
2/3 Seats
Left steering wheel

This company is the cheapest way to explore NZ in a comfortable Mazda van (2009), we drove 7000kms for two months around NZ without problems. The van was in good condition, was mechanically ok, but I think they'll have to check the tyres for the next WOF!
The stuff inside: table, chairs, cookers, did a great job.

We booked the Economy Campervan for 30 days. The service is ok, the company seems to be well organized. The equipment is also sufficient in relation to the low price. But one thing is not ok: the bed! I don't understand how to sleep on that hard and uncomfortable thing they call mattress. It's like laying on the floor, but that would be more comfortable. Due to the hardness of the mattress we had problems to move and to get up in the morning.

It is ok for a couple of days, but after two weeks we had strong back pain and when lying down every part of the body starts aching. Very frustrating when on holiday.

The mattress is also too short. I am 162cm tall, that fits. My mate is 10cm longer and couldn't stretch out his legs while sleeping.

A campervan you can't sleep in is not the purpose of a campervan :(

The van smelled musty, the car headliner had mold spots, disgusting to look at. When picking up the car the tyre pressure was too low, 30 instead of 45 psi! They don't seem to check such things, cause you are also obliged to check oil and water every 1000 kilometers.

We received a few quotes from different rental agencies and chose Rental Car Village mostly based on cost and having a very complete quote.
We liked to option of getting the first van in Auckland and returning to the same place and then flying to Christchurch and picking up another van there.
This saved us the return cost o the ferry which was quite expensive. Doing this was cheaper than paying 2 ferry crossings.
The vans a small Mazda type vans with basic beds and "camping" style cooking arrangements.
We added the bedding, cooler and map option.
We liked the fact that the vans have no advertising on the outside as some we saw had really tacky advertising on them.
We asked for an automatic transmission and they had one.
We had no mechanical issues at all and the fuel cost was fairly good.
The only thing I would like is some hints on driving on the left but we managed it fine after a few days.
We would rent from RCV again.

Rented the Micro-Camper for 17 days in December. Booking went fine.Pick-up location would of course be better at the airport, but ok, it is central. Also not very flexible for the pick-up times (not after 4.30pm or so). But you can bring it back after hours, that's positive. There's a free phone for urgencies, that's also positive.

The good thing: it is cheap, compared to others. BUT of course, nothing's free in this world, so you get what you pay for. Car was quite old, something in the car (gearbox?)made a very strange noise after a while, we had to stop at a mechanics the first day (wonderful to start you holidays), even he could not figure out what it was. In the afternoon every day it got so loud that people were looking at us when we drove past. We were lucky though - it did not break down. But of course, you don't really have peace of mind, during the whole holidays. Didn't use the awning, but if you're tall, you won't be able to fit in without it. Antenna was a piece of wire. Rear vision mirror was fixed with tape (almost loose), and, worst of all, the tires were quite worn, which is not ideal to drive long ways!!
Radio did not work, of course there's no auxiliary input or so.

We left them more gas (for the stove) than what we picked up, but somehow they did not find it, so they just charged us 5$ on our credit card. Only a small amount, but still annoying.

Overall experience: We had a great time in NZ, wonderful holidays. It was great to be able to sleep in the car, which was quite cheap.
Would I rent the same car again? No. If I had to give a recommendation: rather put a little more money in if you can afford it, and get a newer car. Reasons in order: Safety (eg tires), Peace of mind (that it won't break down), comfort (radio, mp3, central locking, smell, driving experience etc.).

Rented the Economy Camper. Very disappointed in the service as the gas bottle was empty when we picked up the Campervan. This was not pointed out to us as I believe the Campervan was not checked properly by Rental Car village before it had left the yard. With several attempts to contact the company, They said Tough, it's just bad luck. No resolution has been reached, and very poor customer service. I would recommend going with one of the larger more repatriable companies.

I had a great experience with Rental Car Village (RCV). First, I cannot emphasize enough how nice it was to have a discreet, non-painted vehicle for traveling in - for the safety factor, and lack of embarrassment factor! Everyone at the company was friendly and professional during my dealings with them (and I observed the same helpful and polite attitude even with some not-so-pleasant customers).

The van was provided to me in tidy condition (save for a little hard-to-access under-bed corner, which had some wadded up trash in it, yuk. But it took me a good week of using the van to find this, so the oversight was understandable.)

I could have benefited from a little more thorough tour of how to use the vehicle before heading out; however, a comprehensive manual addressed most of my questions; I just had to sit and flip through it.

I felt the value of this firm was just leagues beyond other quotes on the internet - I did extensively research prices before booking my trip, and there wasn't even anyone who came close to touching RCV's rates (I did have the advantage of booking several months ahead, though).
The little van was cute, reasonably fun to drive, and seemed well-maintained: when checking the oil for the first time as instructed after 1000 km, the oil was still nice and amber - thus had been changed before my use of the vehicle, and running fairly cleanly to boot. RCV did a nice job of outfitting it as well, in terms of furnishings and curtains; I found the van a perfect little travel companion for my time in New Zealand! I was traveling by myself and was quite comfy. It would be tight with two people at all times, I think.

The Auckland location is very easy to blink and miss, so be sure to get a good idea of where it is to help facilitate your car pickup; I was walking to the site to collect the car and STILL managed to bypass it.

We rented a microcamper. Quite an old car. A/C and radio didn't work. (Didn't seem cheap compared to budget car rental - so use that instead if after transport only). Tidy enough but smelled of smoke (to be fair - they have no smoking policy). Be aware - the rent is by calendar day (not 24 hour rental day). Also - be careful when filling out form - we unintentionally paid an extra $136 on 'no excess' for insurance. We didn't intend to - recommend double checking the paperwork. They were efficient and pleasant enough to deal with. Some of the info they sent is a bit out of date (cost of airport shuttle for two is $44.) You are required to run car thru car wash before returning.

I'm not normally one to write reviews or join sites like Rankers, but thought I should because this company goes way beyond the normal customer service. Left a pair of specs in the vehicle and after contact with us, they kindly posted them first class delivery to the UK free of charge. Replacing these specs would have cost me over £300. Everything else about the rental was A1 as well and their prices were some of the lowest we researched.

Couldn’t fault it for the money. Outstanding customer service. No frills older vehicle but seemed well maintained.

Small station wagon with basic camping equipment plus mattress in the back. It’s ideal because their vehicles don’t have any signage indicating it is a rental which makes them less of a target for opportunist break-ins. We only planned to stay in the back if we couldn’t get other accommodation, but found it comfortable even for our old bones. Proved very useful for a quick snooze after some of the tougher hiking trails. Bedding pack was clean & the plates cups flatwear & so forth looked fairly new.

After using other more expensive rental companies during our previous trips to NZ, we’ll definitely use this company again. A nice homely touch was the honesty box for basic items at company's premises with proceeds going to local hospital.

We picked up an economy camper van in Auckland and dropped it off in Christchurch some weeks later. Prices are very reasonable so perfect for people travelling on a budget.

These campers are an excellent way to see the country, even if you plan to stay in motels/hotels, because you can brew a pot of tea or make a meal in any of the beauty spots around the country which saved us a lot of money. The van, although not new, was very clean, economical to run compared to UK fuel prices and everything worked perfectly. The campers are basic, and do not contain a toilet or shower, but are fine when staying in a camp ground. There is an awning that can be attached to the back, although we slept in a fully closed camper for security. We spent most nights in camp grounds with a few nights in motels and hotels. The campers are not large, but you pay for what you get, and this was at an excellent rate compared to the competition.

We had to return the van shortly after the Christchurch earthquake, and wondered if it would be possible to do so because the Christchurch office was in the cordoned area. We rang ahead and were told to bring it to the cordon and to tell the army officer on duty. We felt like royalty as the army knew we were coming and soon joined by the man from the rentals making the handover at the end of our tour very easy. Campers are supposed to be returned washed but as we couldn't find a carwash open because of the earthquake, Rental Car Village waived this at no charge. I can't imagine EasyCar doing that in the UK!

All in all, an excellent experience from a friendly family company of the type one sees so rarely these days. It was a lovely introduction to New Zealanders and to New Zealand. I have no hesitation in recommending this company for basic campervans if you are prepared to rough it a bit.

They saw no possibility to give me a fair and adequate refund. I had to pay 1884,00 Dollars (1065 Euro) for 3 days rental. In addition the car was in a very bad condition. The company is working like a shark. So I recommand everybody to avoid this company.

They gave me a "microvan" with 176,000 km on it knowing I planned to drive from Auckland to Christchurch. The tires were not good. Interior lights and cigarette lighter disabled. The tent extension was ridiculous, the effort to change it into sleeping quarters required emptying the the whole vehicle of its contents so I had to buy a tent. The curtains were hung on a big bungee cord that attached to the sun visors making the visors unusable. The sleeping cushions provided no cushion at all, only 3 to 4 inches thick. The bedding was one gray sheet and a very used blanket. The vehicle was dirty and they gave it to me with only one quarter tank of gas, so I had to gas it up immediately. I added one day to the trip when I got there but came back one day early and they refused to credit me the day. There are plenty of places to rent vehicles in New Zealand, I would recommend going somewhere else.
