John offers a labour of love - taking small groups to wineries north of Auckland. The full-day tour is particularly good because it includes birdlife (including gannet nesting areas), dramatic scenery and several wineries, all of which were very good, and many of the wines were excellent. John knows the wineries and their staff, knows the wines, and knows the country.

We were in Auckland for 3 days and wanted a way to see the area. We booked the West Coast tour. We enjoyed every minute of the tour. John is an excellent tour guide and ensured that we all had fun, enjoyed ourselves, and saw experienced the beauty Auckland has to offer from beaches, to the country side, to wine. We will definitely be back. Thank you John for an incredible experience!

As wine lovers and having visited wine areas all round the world, this wine tour was up there with the best.
Picked up from our motel, which was out of the way for John, and then to add an Australian nephew at the last minute was all easily dealt with and no fuss!
The information on the tour was just what we wanted, besides the wine knowledge the history of the West Auckland wine district was very interesting and showed just what and who our country is made up of.
We were talking to great grandchildren of the owners who establshed the wineries.
The American on the tour joined in with us and was fun and we had a great day at 6 wineries, lovely lunch at Soljans and out to the Gannet colony on the wild west coast.
All the wine tastings were very generous and they offered good prices and deals for the tourists.
We were deposited back to our out of the way motel. Just the way to enjoy your wines and not have to drive afterwards!
Thanks John. Will recommend to all.

A couple of days before taking our flight back home we decided it would be great to finish our holidays with a winery tour. We found John's tour on the net, gave him a call and it was arranged. As simple as that!
Since we were a bit short on time, we took the afternoon tour and visited 3 vineyards around Auckland. Each of them were quite different: big producer, Sauvignon Blanc pioneers, family business. The range of wine we tasted and the interesting conversations with John and the people at the vineyards made for a nice introduction to the Kiwi winemaking culture and we learned a lot about the art (not to mention the tasty wine!).
John came and picked us up in Auckland and after the tour drove us back to the city center, next to where we wanted to have dinner, perfect!
Altogether a very enjoyable experience. If you start your holidays in Auckland but plan to visit vineyards in the rest of the country this could make for a very nice introduction to the subject.
I can say that it was one of the highlight of our holidays in New Zealand.
One last tip: be sure to make room for a few bottles in your luggage!
My wife and I were on part of our honeymoon in Auckland for 3 days and wanted to take a more "local" wine tour. We found John and the Auckland Wine Trail Tours and were exceptionally pleased with the outcome. John was simply a lovely person and wonderful host and guide. It made the trip even more enjoyable than expected, even with the amount wine consumption from the winery visits, which were quite nice as well! For a half day or full day tour, would genuinely recommend you consider John and Auckland Wine Trail Tours

We took this tour because we were visiting Auckland for 1 day on a cruise and had limited time. John, our tour guide took us to wineries that matched our taste in wines. On the way we stopped to see a gannet colony which was a fascinating insight into these birds. This was a great tour and we highly recommend it.
This was the first wine tour we've ever done and were very pleased with our experience. We were picked up at our Parnell hotel, toured 3 different west coast wineries, and returned back to our hotel again. Each winery was quite different, we sampled many lovely wines of different types, and saw some interesting countyside. The staff at each winery were most accommodating, friendly and informative. John was a great host and explained the history of the wine industry in this area as we drove along. We would definitely recommend this tour, and the full day tour would be even better, I'm sure.
Having been to Waiheke Island before, I wanted to try a new place for wine tasting and happened upon the Auckland Wine Trail Tours website. The full-day "Waterfalls & Wines" tour sounded great, and indeed it was! So much so that I decided to choose that destination to propose to my girlfriend (who is now my fiancee and soon-to-be-wife!). I called up John -- our tour guide and wine expert -- to arrange everything beforehand. It turned out we would be the only ones on the tour that day (it was a weekday), so it was even more perfect.
In the morning John picked us up and drove us to the Arataki Heritage Centre -- along the way giving us a brief history of New Zealand and telling us our plans for the day. After giving us time to soak in the views of the Waitakere rainforest, as well as overlooking the Manukau Harbour, we went on a short hike to Karekare -- a beautiful black-sand beach where they filmed scenes from the movie "The Piano" -- and spent some time there. We then walked a bit to this beautiful, secluded waterfall where I popped the question. John knew to give us some privacy but ended up being our only witness! It was incredible. The rest of the day whizzed by because we were so happy but we had a wonderful wine tasting and lunch at an awesome winery, followed by wine tastings at three other quiet and private vineyards famous in the West Auckland area. Not only were we able to try a large selection of wines -- often completing the entire wine list available for tasting! -- John was extremely helpful in the process, talking us through the wines and giving us more information to help us enjoy our visits.
I can't recommend this tour -- and John in particular -- enough. He gave us just the right amount of privacy when we wanted it, but was always available to talk us through what we were seeing, where we were going next, and the wines we were tasting. I hope to join another one of his tours again soon!
