Our group of 8 booked a guided tour A2O, commencing March 2020.
Due to the coronavirus it was cancelled. We paid for food, accommodation, bike hire and a guide but received just a 50 percent cent refund.
Our group considered this a very unprofessional company as other companies in NZ did the right thing and gave a full refund, less the deposit, which was an admirable thing to do.
They also would not pick us up from our accommodation. Very poor service.
We would definitely not recommend this company.

We travelled the Alps2Ocean EASY with Hilary as our leader and it was fantastic.
The sections of the trail that we cycled had amazing scenery. PureTrails provided excellent support, accommodation, food and leadership.
We would happily join them for another cycling holiday.
We wish PureTrails all the best during the difficult months ahead.

I have just completed the Round the Mountain Bike tour with Pure Trails. It was very well organised with first class accomodation and meals, including lovely picnic lunches, made so enjoyable by the great weather. Thanks to the two "John's" who were such competent and friendly leaders/drivers. Pure Trails greatly enhanced the basic Round the Mountain trail by adding the Te Anau to Manapouri leg. I would love to do another ride with them.

We enjoyed a great trip with Pure Trails, cycling the easy A2O. As a group of 61-69 year olds, we found the trip meticulously planned, the bikes of excellent quality and the accommodation and meal venues outstanding. Our guide, Terry, briefed us well on all aspects of the trail, so we were prepared for whatever was ahead. A thoroughly great experience and adventure.

We went on the Marlborough Wine Tour and a week later on the Otago Rail Trail. Both trips were excellent. Pure Trails looks after every detail. Meals were excellent, and we could pre-order daily what we wanted out of four or five choices. Accommodations was great as well. They have a large vehicle with trailer so there was lots of room for people and luggage. Group size was under 10 people which was great. The tour descriptions we received in advance were well detailed and accurate. The hosts were very accommodating with any additional requests. They check in with you along the trail and make sure one takes the correct turns, leaving no worry about getting lost. Cycles were top notch with trip computers on them. They offer additional options to start your tour or end your tour in a location other than Chridtchurch. Can't say enough good things!

My wife, a cycling novice, and I completed the Central Otago Rail Trail in March 2016. The bikes provided were in excellent condition. The guide (Joyce) was superb, and fun. The accomodation was excellent and the food provided was also beyond reproach. The side trips including curling were great fun, and the group of 13 rapidly coalesced and enjoyed each other. The scenery was extraordinary and we were lucky with the weather with a little rain and mist but mostly sunshine and clear views.
We intend to return soon to do another grade 1 tour and would absolutely recommend Pure Trails for anyone with any level of cycling experience.

John K. was a happy, helpful, knowledgeable and unflappable guide. The bikes suited the terrain. The route was well chosen with a variety of bike path surfaces and scenery.
When the cycling got too tough (a few times!) the bus was always there.

My husband and I went on the Alps2Ocean cycle trail with PureTrails New Zealand in January 2016. We had a fantastic time. The route itself is beautiful, but challenging for a non-cyclist like myself, however I felt a real sense of achievement in finishing the 314km route.

PureTrails were a great outfit to travel with. Everything was well organised, accomodation was basic, but clean and well located, the bikes were very good and ideal for the route and the food selections were good, hearty and tasty ... just what you needed after a day of riding. Our guide, Peter, was great. He made sure we all knew where we were going, got there and had fun along the way. He was a fountain of information and really enjoyed what he was doing.

I would recommend both the route and PureTrails. It was a great experience.

What an amazing experience! My husband and I completed the Ride the Hurunui ride in a smaller than normally accepted group and we had an experience way beyond our expectations. Peter was a knowledgeable and interesting guide who stepped in to replace Hillary at the last minute as she had caught chicken pox from her children. Peter's wife, Chris, joined us at the Mt Lyford Lodge and walked the Kaikoura Peninsula with us. She proved to be a fountain of information just like Peter. Every aspect of the tour - bikes, accommodation, transport vehicles and support were all top quality and we could not fault a thing. It proved to be a really different way to "see NZ"! My husband has been to NZ about a dozen times but only to snow ski and it was my first trip so for a pair of Aussies who knew little about what NZ had to offer, we came away with wonderful memories that not many visitors would experience. We chose an easy ride because I only took up cycling when I retired last Christmas but found the riding to be well rated and within my capabilities. In fact, it left us hungry for more and we are already planning our next trip which will likely be the Otago Trail. Absolutely without doubt, it will choose to book with Pure Trails New Zealand - you cannot go past them.

For anyone wanting to experience an extremely well organised, fun, challenging biking adventure in stunning surrounds - this is for you! My primary goal was to cycle in NZ and to have the organisation, planning and regional information/knowledge provided locally. Hilary and John K provided all of these things and more during my 5 day Mackenzie Country trip. From the time we were fitted for the bikes to the time we were dropped off at the hotel at the conclusion of the trip everything was managed professionally, with great efficiency, flexibility and good humour. As previous reviewers have also noted the accommodation and food were fantastic and the interesting and knowledgeable commentary added yet another degree of enjoyment. Thanks to John and Hilary for making this such a wonderful and memorable holiday and to my happy band of co travellers too.

Recently toured the Tasman Great Trail. 5 days of absolute magical cycling in rain free weather. The organisation from pre trip advice to the actual daily activities was superb. Tour guide John was efficient, friendly and an absolute expert on every thing NZ.
Nothing was a trouble to John including those "lost" moments we all had even after pretty clear directions! John would always proceed to any point that required further instructions so the confidence to freewheel along was never a problem.
The accommodation and food were spot on, all high quality and enjoyable for those important "relaxation" moments.

We cycled the Wild West Coast tour which was extremely well organised. Five days without rain! Being mature cyclists we had to walk up hills on two or three occasions, but we managed the whole distance with the younger people.; :Plenty of variety in areas ridden - bush, coast, farmland, plus visits to ghost mine, Pancake Rocks, Oparara Arch & places off the beaten track. Saw a lot we would have missed if on our own. Our guide had great knowledge of the area.. Good accommodation & meals.

My wife and I rode two of their tours in quick succession, the Tasman Taste and the Hurunui and really enjoyed ourselves. (Especially going downhill, adds my wife.) Amazingly, Hilary and colleagues did so much meticulous research into their routes that they were very often flat or down hill. This reflects that many of the tours are ideal for older cyclists who want to enjoy the wonderful scenery as much as been first up the mountain.
I really enjoyed the Hurunui Tour, especially the very wet day riding the track that follows the Clarence River through Molesworth Station country. We were very wet and muddy at the end of it but all the hotels were excellent with welcome hot water!
The penultimate day was a long descent to Kaikoura, when we were fit enough not to notice the climbs and could appreciate the fantastic countryside.
We plan to come back and do some more when we can, having made such good friends with our cycling "team" and with our guides and drivers.
Highly recommended.

We did the Hurunui ride with 8 riders over 5 days. The tour was excellent with good accommodation and good food. The ride is a mixture of cycling and visiting assorted attractions and vineyards along the way. It would not be a challenge for a serious cyclist however the two strong serious cyclists in our group very much enjoyed the experience. There was occasional gravel on the ride which needs great respect as even experienced cyclists can come to grief on such a surface. Highly recommended and we hope to do another of PureTrail's trips. While we traversed gravel paths, something we are not familiar with here, we grumbled a bit but got soon accepted them for what they are. PureTrails is an excellent team of professionals. All our accommodation had been carefully selected to include not only different styles, but wonderful surroundings and outlooks. Our meals too, were all excellent. We had always thought of cycling the Otago Rail Trail and in October 2013 a number of circumstances came together to make it possible. We are well past the age where cycling with backpack and camping is attractive and on the advice of some New Zealand friends we opted to travel with Pure Trails. I must admit that I was a bit miffed to read in the small print that bike hire was extra (on a cycling trip?) but in the end went along with it. It turned out that our party of four, Granddad, Grandma, mother and grandson, were the only people on the first trip. We had brand new bikes, a first class guide, John W., and a large 10-seater van to travel in with plenty of room to stow all our gear. From the early morning Wednesday pick up at our hotel in Christchurch to the drop off at Christchurch airport on Sunday evening the whole time was a wonderful experience and one we cannot recommend highly enough. The games we had taken to keep the 10 year old occupied in the evenings were never used and every waking moment was taken up with all sorts of activities. After cycling until three or four o’clock, John W. would whisk us away in the van to meet interesting people and/or visit local sights. After dinner bed seemed very attractive, especially with the generally early morning starts! We are not going to describe the trip in detail as our advice is to go and do it. The accommodation was splendid, the meals were superb – in fact the one reservation I had on the whole trip was that there was generally too much food available – and for once the weather was on our side. Apart from the first morning’s mist we had mainly sunny days and although it was very early spring we did cycle in T-shirts on occasions. We cannot praise Pure Trails enough – the whole trip had been carefully thought out and the plans were reasonably flexible – our final comment is that if you want to cycle the Rail Trail in relative comfort pick Pure Trails – they really do know what they are doing.

Southern Mountains and Lakes (Feb 2013)
What a fantastic experience – a variety of dramatic and pleasant scenery, excellent range of accommodation, delicious high quality meals (both from the hands of our wonderful guides Sue and Chris, and at a variety of restaurants), great company and informative commentary. Our guides Sue and Chris were excellent in that role but also were great company, with good senses of humour. The tour provided a balance between scenic views whilst travelling on the bus, and great walking in a range of terrains/environments - mountains, lakes, forests etc – coupled with unique fauna experiences, including kiwi, penguins and a wide range of native birds. A photographer’s paradise! The organisation was top notch – everything ran smoothly. A thoroughly recommendable experience: not glitz, just good travel and walking in a friendly environment.

Northern Beaches and Sounds (Mar2013)
This company’s reputation remains superb in our minds after another wonderful experience. As usual everything ran to schedule under the careful watch of our guide Sue. There was a wide range of terrains on offer – beaches, forests, lakes, mountains etc – all with interesting commentary from Sue. The walking was on good tracks, and to a degree away from the madding crowd, so we were usually on our own to enjoy both the spectacular and the sedate elements of the scenery on offer. Another photographer’s paradise! Accommodation was varied, including the interesting San Souci at Golden Bay, but always of a high standard. Meals too were excellent: evening meals at a local restaurant or prepared with skill by Sue, healthy sandwiches/rolls for lunch and a good variety in continental breakfasts. They were always healthy and readied us for the day’s (or next day’s) adventure. We couldn’t find a single highlight of the tour as there was something special each day and it would be an injustice to rank them.

Congratulations PureTrails on an excellant, well planned and presented "Ride the Wild West" bike tour. This experience ticked all my boxes- fun, laughter, great company and beautiful scenery.
Our friendly tour guides were patient, considerate, well organised and very informative.
Accomodation was well chosen, clean and comfortable and the yummy food was plentiful with lots of extra healthy snacks and drinks.
I found our beautiful scenic ride (on quality bikes) not too difficult although sometimes challenging ... but we were given plenty of riding options..
Having already done the "Southern Lakes & Mountains" hike with Pure Trails I am already planning and looking forward to my next bike ride with a group of friends from Australia......and thank you also for helping the three Aussies girls celebrate a memorable Australia Day!!

I have now travelled twice with Pure Trails and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending them. I have done both trips on the South Island and am certainly planning to go back and do the North Island with them. A great family company, warm, friendly and they really know New Zealand. Great food, great palces to stay and great walks. It's the little things that they get right all the time : on my first trip we had been out on a longish trek and were all famished when we got back to our lodgings. Whilst we were out onbe of our lovely guides had heard that "local lobster/crayfish" were available and so had gone out in a boat and got some for us - what a treat!! On the most recent trip ( on Stuart Island) we had done a great walk but the last few kilkometres were on the road back to our lodgings. It started to rain and I was pretty tired and then over the hill came Sue in a van to pick us up. It hadn't been arranged but she just knew it would be a good thing to do. New Zealand is one of the best places to go for trekking and Pure Trails is a real gem. Also gotta go back and do one of their Rail trail tours. I've heard they are fantastic as well.

The Wild West Coast lived up to its name and the cycle tour with PureTrails took us into the wilds of the back country as well as along the coast road. The guides were knowledgable and experienced, overall an excellent bike tour.

Recently I rode the Otago Rail Trail. Top marks for their excellent support, organisation, accommodation, side tours included, meal venues chosen, great bikes. Magnificent scenery!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Pure Trails NZ Southern Lakes and Mountains experience and here are some of the reasons why:

> Accommodation was comfortable and we mostly stayed in scenic, beachside and historic places, not the normal tourist strip which gave us a homely and more local perspective.

> The walks were well paced, parts of the well known walks as well as those off the beaten track which gave us a good overview of the South Island.

> The catered food was fresh, wholesome and meal times were very enjoyable. Sue was a great cook.

> Our hosts Sue and John were friendly and accommodating creating a relaxed family-like atmosphere.

> The holiday was thoroughly planned and well paced and provided the flexibility to change plans to cater for the unforeseen or inclement weather.

> A perfect balance of healthy exercise and relaxation.

Thoroughly enjoyed our trip on the Otago Rail Trail with Pure Trails. Our accommodation was great as were all our meals. Sue did a great job as our guide. We would certainly recommend to our friends and would even contemplate doing the trail again.

As a regular rail trail rider here in Victoria I can honestly rate the Puretrails Central Otago Rail trail tour very highly. Everything was made so easy for us to just mount our bikes and enjoy the ride. All accommodation was of a high standard, the food was delicious, the bikes were excellent with good gearing. The 'extra' activities also added to the quality of the experience, especially the Curling at Nazeby - what a hoot. Any moderately experienced rider would find this tour within their capabilities.
