This is a family-run conservation operation on Banks Peninsula that has been quietly doing remarkable work for over 30 years. The largest White-flippered penguin colony on mainland NZ lives on their land, and the colony is actually growing, which tells you something. Use promo code RANKERS for 10% off while you're at it.

The evening penguin tour is the centrepiece. You'll get to see the little penguins tucked up in their nest boxes, roofs lifted so you can peek in, binoculars provided to spot groups waiting offshore for dark to fall. The guides are completely focused on the birds first, which means some evenings you won't see them come ashore as your presence would spook them. That's not a complaint, that's the point of the place.

If you can do the overnight or multi-day package, do it. Travellers consistently rate it as good value, and the sea kayaking in the marine reserve adds proper depth to the trip. Dolphins and seals showing up alongside the penguins is not unusual. Take the shuttle from Akaroa rather than driving yourself on the steep gravel roads. Worth noting too.

Information

Observe penguins in the wild on this evening adventure. A wonderful option for people who wish to take part in our monitoring program and learn more, in depth, about our conservation efforts giving you great insight into the life of a penguin.

Description
After a stunning scenic drive from our office with 4WD minibus over Akaroa extinct volcano crater rim you will discover the tranquil beauty of Pohatu bay.

Once in the bay you will set off for a walk and talk around the colony to monitor nesting sites and make sure that our Little Penguins are doing well. You will be able to see them up close and learn about their behaviors and how our 30+ years of conservation efforts have saved the Flea bay colony from extinction.

Then, you will have the opportunity to spot the penguins undisturbed from our hides, socializing on the water with our binoculars and our telescope and at dusk a very high likelihood of some returning to shore.
We depart before it gets to dark and leave it for the penguins to do their thing without us in their way.

From December to February we sometimes have penguins in care and you may have the chance to see some of our caring work such as supplemental feedings and releases.
