It was amazing! The two guides Maria and Cole were so nice and friendly. We saw so many dolphins. A group of over hundred was swimming around us. They were jumping out of the water and interacting with us. Just a stunning moment. Thanks a lot for this great experience!

We were really lucky to see such a big group of dolphins. That’s not usually. But I think without the dolphins it will be a great kayaking experience as well. There is so many interesting marine life in Kaikoura and the guides are trying their best to get you as close as possible to that marine life.

Kaikoura Kayaks were fantastic. The staff went out of their way to ensure our experience was truly wonderful. We were able to get up close to the seals, learn about their habitat, learn about the other wildlife in the area as well as experience the exhilaration of paddling out into the bay and near the break water. Although we did go for a swim due to my partner and I both leaning the same way at the same time, the staff were close by and helped us back onto our kayak quickly. Would highly recommend the experience to everyone. Don't need to be super fit as the exertion is minimal. Great activity for teenagers. They are also able to accommodate the little ones with advance notice.

Wow, what a great team and a great experience. We were first met by Kim in the office who was totally accommodating in fitting our family of 5 into a tour for the next day. Matt and Connor are both fantastic guides who are professional yet relaxed and have a great sense of humor. They were ably assisted by two work experience students, Matt and Jake. Matt (work experience version) teamed up with our 6 year old son and did an excellent job in looking after him and managing his 'need for speed' and regular supply of energy boosting 'treats'! Matt (senior) was our main guide and was fantastic in giving us a relaxed and enjoyable tour with some great education and information, plus a good dose of humor, mixed in. We had as great view of the seals and were lucky to get up and close to one in the water. Greatly enjoyed going around the point and into the open water.

Absolutely totally recommend Kaikoura Kayaks. Today was our second trip with this company and we will definitely return. Came through from Christchurch for a day trip and had pre-booked . They were fabulous contacting us to see if we could come earlier due to changes in weather conditions. Connor was a great guide very safety conscious and checking we were ok when the swell picked up. We were so lucky to see 5 Orca. We are a couple of 50 something's and so long as you are fittish this trip is for you.

Beautiful, sunny day during the winter season! I was the only person booking the tour on this day, but paddling with Conner was fun. He gave a briefing before kayaking and on the sea he explained a lot about wildlife and geology (especially about what happened to the area after the earthquake). We saw some fur seals and seabirds! I would recommend Kaikoura Kayaks.

We weren't able to do the whale watch on a particular day so noticed in the local surf shop that they were advertising sea kayak trips. We had a good late afternoon trip although it was a little rough near the headland so extra paddle effort was required. The team that went with us were very safety conscious & provided an excellent pre trip briefing. I would recommend Kaikoura Kayaks. However you need to be aware this is a trip for the fit & healthy as it's not just a gentle paddle!

We couldn't get onto the Whale Watch as it was so busy so by chance we turned up at Kaikoura Kayaks on the off chance we could get out onto the water. Within 40 minutes of turning up at the office, we were sorted out for a two hour paddle with Tyla. It was one f the best parts of our trip on the South Island. We were very impressed with Tyla's professionalism and his awareness of safety but with a relaxed attitude so that we felt very well cared for. We loved seeing seals up close and an albatross soaring up above us. Tyla's knowledge of the local wildlife and obvious enthusiasm on the subject was infectious. He also explained about the geology and we were treated to see the "Hope Springs" that have appeared since the November earthquake. A combination of an active afternoon, learning about the area and witnessing the wildlife at very close quarters was quite magical.
We would thoroughly recommend Kaikoura Kayaks and hope you have as good a trip as we did.

A brilliant day out with Ari and Conner who paired up to make great guides for the morning. The weather was fabulous and I would venture to say that it was better than the whale watching.
The fact that my 72 year old mother enjoyed the double kayak experience is a testament to Ari and Conner's skills and super sense of humour . An awesome paddle with a good balance of knowledge about the geology, marine life and so many other things thrown in. The seals, blue penguins and the new "bubbles" post earthquake (named after Conner's daughter as he discovered them) were something special.
Despite the earthquake and the longer journey to Kaikoura it was more than worth going just for the kayaking. Best to go on a calm sunny day if you can.

Enjoyed my second outing with this well-run, professional and fun team on New Years eve. A great experience to get out on the water for a different perspective of the stunning scenery plus get close to local wildlife. We paddled on the northern side of the peninsular from Jimmy Armers Beach (on my previous trip a couple of years ago we left from South Bay) out to the seal colony rock platform to watch seals on the rocks & in the water, little blue penguins feeding on the water, a group of dusky dolphins swimming by, saw shearwaters & other birds.
Matt, Connor & Ary established a great rapport with the group and provided a comprehensive safety briefing & how to paddle basics before hitting the water. The guides were knowledgeable, fun and safety conscious.
Kaikoura Kayaks provide a great service in a stunning place - highly recommended.

My brother, teenage nieces and I went out with Kaikoura Kayaks a few days ago and had the most fantastic experience. Our guide Ari was friendly, helpful, professional and fun. It felt safe but also adventurous and we all had the most amazing time. I've done most of the tourist trips around Kaikoura now, and kayaking on South Bay was by far the best. We paddled around a visiting cruise ship, visited seals on the rocks, some of whom interacted with us. Ari was very informative about them, the various sea birds and other marine life around us. We took it easy on the calm blue waters, soaking in the spectacular scenery, and paddled in to shore on the waves. The girls became tired near the end of our two hours on the water and Ari towed them back. We all want to go again ASAP! If you can only do one thing on a visit to Kaikoura, I say go Sea Kayaking! The lunch group who went out a few hours after us even saw dolphins. Just "wow"!

We went out twice with those guys: first, just the adults launching from South Bay to see the now famous Hope Springs and then again with the whole family on sit-on double kayaks to potter around the seal colony, launching from the beach on the Esplanade. Fun trips both times, and very clear that family safety is top priority. My son and I have just been out with Kaikoura Kayaks after the earthquake that rocked the area and I have to say that its a fantastic way to appreciate how much the shoreline has changed. Just an incredible experience. I live in the area and was just blown away. The new feature the lads from Kaikoura Kayaks having been calling Hope Springs tops it off. Its some sort of GEO thermal spring bubbling up in a quiet little bay. Kaikoura's main characters were all out and about, plenty of seals, large amounts of sea birds and to top it off a couple of dolphins greeted us. Our guide Conner was awesome, felt well looked after the whole time. Cheers Kaikoura Kayaks.

We had a great time with Ayre as our guide. To be fair, we had a drop dead gorgeous day...which actually may not be that uncommon....the experience/view is extraordinary. We are from Colorado, so used to beautiful mountains...but make them twice as tall, and add a gorgeous ocean and seals and it was an amazing day. Highly recommended as something to do when in South Island...to compliment Kayaking in the Milford sound on the west side. With the nature of the weather...odds are very good you will have beautiful weather (different than the west side), and can't imagine a better tour experience (and surfing on the gentle swells on the way back was an added bonus. Only reason for a 9 vs. 10 was not in the tour companies control...we were hoping for additional sea life beyond the seals, and our timing was off. In short..if in the area...this is a must do. Loved the time out on the water and seeing the seals in their natural habitat. My only very slight disappointment was that their were two guides and we were broken up into 2 groups and the other group seem to have spent more time close up and around the seals where as we headed back and spent more kyaking time in the ocean. I don't always feel safe in canoes but these kayaks are something else. Paddling in pairs and always under supervision the group made it's way to Whalers Bay. The view of the land from the sea was spectacular. Sea conditions were flat calm and the water crystal clear. We saw lots of sea birds and seals....one was enjoying an octopus for it's lunch. There are often dolphins about but not for us today. Our guide Matt who owns the business was fun throughout. He made everyone relaxed, felt safe and that we didn't miss anything. Our first ime on a kayak and Brett and Kelly were great, all the gear we needed to keep warm and dry, lots of useful instruction and reassurance for first timers ( one of us being very anxious and prone to sea sickness). We were close to seals, the fish they were eating ( terrible table manners!), and many types of marine birds. Brett provided a lot of interesting information about all we saw and took some photos of us on our camera that impressed our daughters back home. 10/10 for my experience with Kaikoura kayaks, it was not ideal weather for a nice calm trip kayaking how ever the group was made well aware of the conditions and that seeing a lot of sea life was probably not going to be the case and that it would be more of an adventure trip and that it was!! We were told if we wanted to change to the next day that was no problem but we all went ahead! Our guide Arye was great and created a very fun but professional environment for the group making sure we were all happy and safe from the moment we got to the bay and always checking us while on the water as it was quite rough, he also had a lot of interesting information regarding the sea life and the area so was always interesting (he also had some good jokes) the tour was a great leangth of time as it was not the hottest day we were taken care of with all the equipment needed to keep us warm and I didn't feel cold at all while on the water so was able to enjoy the trip to the fullest!! We had an incredible experience kayaking with a huge pod of dusky dolphins in Kaikoura last weekend. We were watching them from the beach but really wanted to get out on the water, so we called Kaikoura kayaks and within about 20 minutes we were paddling away completely surrounded by hundreds of leaping dolphins. Arie was so relaxed and helpful, nothing was a problem, rental price for a 2-person sit on top kayak was very reasonable, good safety gear provided, and we were so thrilled to have been able to seize the moment and make it all happen like that. If we hadn't had a plane to catch we would have loved to stay out longer - it was a beautiful calm sunny day too and the coastline is spectacular. Would definitely recommend using these guys if you're looking for a cool kayaking experience in beautiful Kaikoura.

Oh Man, just got back from my tour with Arie and Gary. It was raining at the beginning of our trip, so I kinda regretted going on the tour at first, but when the first seals showed up, I forgot about the wather and was just amazed by all the animals. The guides told us heaps of fun facts about seals, dolphins, albatrosses and the rest of the ocean. I would always go on that tour again, it is worth it. Good Luck with the weather.

My wife and I did the guided tour one morning. The guides were great, taught us everything we needed to know to have a successful and safe trip. We got to paddle out into the ocean and around the bays, we saw lots of birds, got close to some seals sunning themselves, and even saw a seal feeding on an octopus! It was pretty wild!! The guides gave us lots of information about the local wildlife and made sure we all stayed relatively together, but let each boat go at its own pace. The experience was amazing, we highly recommend it.

Really a great experience! We rented a kayak (for two) for a full day. We did not go with a guided tour, which offered us more freedom where to go and where to stay for a while. First: they provide good material and especially a very comprehensive safety equipment including radio, first aid kit, flares, good sprayskirts etc. They introduced us (while we were not taking the guided tour) into the surroundings. Second: we saw everything they mentioned: hunting seals (seals are everywhere around), a stingray, blue penguins and especially awesome: about 10 dusky dolphins around us! They were left and right, in front and under the boat, riding the waves together with us, splashed us wet. Not once, they were coming back again and again. Unbelievable!
This tour can only be recommended - and the company offers a good value.

We had really high hopes for this tour as the reviews are so great, however I recommend taking the last tour of the day as 4 of our group of 8 were half an hour late, so instead of getting an extra half an hour on the water we literally kayaked 100m offshore, stayed in one spot with a seal in the water, then kayaked back. No apologies. The guides were great but you can get much better value for money in Akaroa and also see dolphins and penguins for cheaper.

Reviewed over 4 years ago

Kaikoura Kayaks responds:

So sorry to hear this Chole!
We have talked to Arye and Finn your Guides on the day and they honestly felt every one had a great time! At the end of the tour the opportunity was given for feedback, good or bad, nothing was mentioned at that point. Finns guiding log shows the weather was great, with a full tide and plenty of Seals lazing in the sun on the shore with one Seal (Rudolph) feeding on an Octopus while swimming around the kayaks.
The Group of 4 (Ellie her Mum and sisters ) you are talking about were not late as you have suggested and everything ran to time so there was no need to add on any extra.
Our guide ratio is normally 1 Guide to 8 Clients and on your tour you had 2 guides to your group of 8.
South Point of the Kaikoura Peninsula is at least 1.5 kms from the starting point of your tour and most of the marine life is within 100 meter's of the shoreline which also has the best paddling conditions on an exposed coastline, unlike Akaroa which is a sheltered harbour.
I also recall giving both of you guys FREE T-Shirts / Caps at the start of your tour which I was not obliged too. After talking to you further about this deal offered only from booking through the Kaikoura I Site we went out of our way to make you both happy with the FREE offer.
We are still left wondering how you could not have enjoyed your time paddling in Kaikoura Chloe? We do however appreciate your feedback and will take it on board!

My sister and I are new to kayaking (we've each only gone a few times) and this was a great experience. The water was choppier than usual, but our guide, Matt, made sure we were all comfortable to still go out in the conditions. We had a great time, and the choppier water honestly made the experience even more interesting. We got to see the seals up on the side of the coast, as well as swim with them in the water. And I'm sure if you go on a calmer day, you'll get to see even more seals. It's a must do if you're in Kaikoura.

Highly recommended tour! Small group of four kayaks in beautiful surroundings with plenty of wildlife to adore. Guide was happy to linger around for us to be mesmerized by fur seal eating octopus right in front of us in the water (2m away). Requires a certain level of fitness but there are plenty of breaks and helpful instructions for those new to kayaking. Scenery alone is worth the tour but fur seals are a big bonus (and you're pretty much guaranteed to see them).

We were able to see two pods of dolphins, some of the fur seals and get some good paddling in. Did all the pre-kayak drills and then we were out on the water and paddled out into the midst of a huge pod of Dusky Dolphins who then proceeded to play and display all around us. This was simply awesome to be so close that they are surfing right beside us, jumping, twisting and flipping right in front of us. We had fun on our Seal Kayak adventure! The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Unfortunately, however, despite all the "guarantees," we hardly saw any animals at all, let alone fur seals. We saw two blue penguins but that's it- no seals in the water and only one far away on a rock. Of course you can't guarantee seeing any wildlife in the ocean, but maybe they should be a bit more careful about getting everyone's hopes up with the promises they make.

There is only two world to sum up Kaikoura kayaks, BLOODY AMAZING!!! The staff there are really friendly and are always looking out for you, and making sure that you get the best experience possibly for you time on the water.

I saw so wild live on my 3 hour trip, from dusk dolphins to albatross to a heap of fur seals of all sizes. Its just not the same walking out to the seal haul out at point keen. Sure you'll see some seals from a far, but be right next to a magnificent create that is at home in his natural environment and want to come and interact with you and play is just something else.

Gary, my guide for the trip, was full of so much knowledge not only on the area in and around Kaikoura but on other parts of New Zealand. Giving me great advice on cool things to go do and see up and down the country.

I would say that if you in Kaikoura for a few days, or even just passing through, Kaikoura Kayaks is a must do attraction to go and experience for yourself. two thumbs up !!

He´s explaining you everything about kayaking, seals, dolphins, the country and all other stuff you want to know. He has a huge experience! It was a great time I will never forget. I highly recommend this tour if you are interested in doing a kayak tour, especially with seals or dolphins. It was the first time for me in a kayak, therefore you don´t need any experience. They only use the best equipment and it´s absolutely safe. If you like it a bit more "adventurous" you can even ask for a "ride on a wave". Oh by the way: We had a clear blue sky with white mountains in the background and seals on the rocks :)

A fantastic experience. Booked last minute, the service was great from the start. We are a family, 2 adults and 2 children aged 8 and 9. After a thorough safety briefing we set off in the late afternoon and had dolphins swimming beside us, then watched the seals. We wondered why the dolphins had all disappeared - then Matt (one of the guides) spotted the misty blow holes of Orca killer whales. So we paddled over to them and saw a 3 whale pod rising up just 100 yards from the canoes. To use a NZ phrase, it was "awesome" and one the children will never forget. Throw in a black Pectral ? bird that landed amongst us, dolphins, seals and killer whales. Great. Big thanks.

I am traveling on my own during the low season and have had so much trouble getting into a kayak! It's impossible to rent a kayak for solo use (probably a good safety idea), and the operators generally require 2 or more people for any tours. However, at Kaikoura Kayaks, I was able to arrange a tour, even though there were no other sign-ups.

Matt was a great guide. He knows so much about the seals, the birds, how to read the weather, and more. I really enjoyed learning from him about the marine life in the area. And of course, it was amazing to get up close with the seals! On our way back in, we even caught some waves with the kayak -- so fun!

This was a wonderful way to explore Kaikoura. I would absolutely recommend Matt and Kaikoura Kayaks -- you'll have a great time!

Even though I had no previous kayaking experience, I could enjoy the half-day trip so much. It was amazing that we could get that close to the wild animals living in the beautiful bay. I can recommend Kaikoura Kayak to everyone coming to NZ.

My wife and I had a great experience with Gary of Kaikoura Kayaks on cool Sunday morning in February. We were the only pair on his tour, so it was more like paddling with a local friend than being on a "guided tour". Shortly after we left the shore, we were surrounded by dolphins, and the video and still photos we shot are the ones that people back home remark about the most. Our timing was a little off on the seals - they were mostly just lounging around on the rocks after a long night's feeding - but overall it was one of the best experiences of a trip that was full of great experiences. Special thanks to Gary- we really enjoyed his insight and conversation.

Admittedly we had a perfect morning for a kayak trip but our experience with this company was first class from start to finish. Their equipment was in excellent condition, most was new or nearly new. Our leader was very professional, curtious and knowledgable. We felt safe under his supervision even though we had little experience of kayaking. We can highly recommend this company and their trips.

We went out onthe ocean on a bright sunny morning from south bay. The wind was calm and we watched the birds as we paddled along through the rocks on the points. We watched some fur seala sunning themselves on the rocks. Then on the biggest point some seals slipped into the water. Theyswam aroun us and under us. Rolling and frollicking with each other. Tjen our guide spotted a seal feasting on an octapus. We paddled closer to watch and take pictures. He woud bring the octapus into the air and shake off an arm and chew a nd swallow quickly, thne repeat the promis again. We watched for awhile and then the seal left it. The octapus will go down and hide so it can repair itself. This ia amazing to see and we were sp fortunate to witness all this. Thank you Kiakoura Kayaks

With a group of 5 friends from England travelling around NZ for the rugby world cup. In between games we drove around visiting as much of the country as we can. We arrived in Kaikoura after dark and checked into the our hostel. We got up early and tried to book to go whale watching. Unfortunately the whale watching was fully booked but the hostel recommended that we go on a seal kayaking trip. They contacted kaikoura kayaks and even though they didn't have a trip planned they were happy to take us out as a private group.
Our guide Gary came to the hostel to pick us up and took us down to the beach on the other side of the peninsula. After a demonstration of the equipment and the inevitable health and safety instructions we launched the kayaks and set off. We spent the rest of the morning paddling around and watching the fur seals on the rocks. It was a beautiful day and massively enjoyable. A great way of seeing the seals, they seem to be a lot less bothered and relaxed about you up you getting close when you're in a kayak. In addition Gary recommended a place on the way up to Marlborough where seal pups hang out in a waterfall plunge pool! Amazing.

Matt and Garry are really knowledgeable about the unique Kaikoura region and the marine, mammal and bird life living here. There were 3 of us from the Flying Kiwi tour - 2 with some kayaking experience and one complete beginner. As we unloaded the double kayaks the sun glistened on the water and the mountains loomed above. With long paddle strokes cutting the water, in minutes we were close to the reef watching a New Zealand fur seal looking for food. It was awesome to get so close and see the grace and ease with which they swim and dive. The ocean was teaming with small red dots. Garry explained that there was an abundance of krill this year and Southern Right whales had been seen making the most of this feast. Unbelievable that a creature of such size can survive on such a tiny organism as a staple food. There were hundreds of shearwaters flocking around the surface of the water - could this mean shoals of fish which may mean dolphins, orca or seals too?? We paddled deeper to find out. The glassy calm of the inner reef turned to gentle rolling swell and soon we were completely surrounded by shearwaters -swooping, diving and running on the surface as they took of and landed - awesome. A huge giant black petrol swooped in over our kayaks. Albatross came to investigate - all making the most of the krill buffet. A Hectors dolphin suddenly rose for breath in the water in front of us - he looked straight at us before diving and disappearing into the depths. The snowy peaks shone brightly against the blue sky in the last moments of daylight, we paddled back to shore, passing by pied cormorants drying their wings and chunky fur seals flopping about on the rocks. If you are touring New Zealand - this is definitely an activity not to be missed. Thanks guys for a fabulous trip.

Kiakoura Kayaks were amazing and we were so lucky with the wildlife. not only did we see a fur seal playing with his food (an octopus) right next to opur kayaks but then a Southern Right Whale, One of the rarest whales in the world, appeared about 20 feet away! We were so lucky and totally blown away by the experience. Even the Department of Conservation were interested in seeing our video footage! After two months in NZ my day with Kiakoura Kayaks remains one of my most cherished memories. Cheers guys!

We did the Seal Kayaking Tour this morning and it was so fantastic! First we went with the van to the beach and there Matt gave us all the instructions and gear, all very professional and personal at the same time. The gear you get is very good, he even has hats if you forgot yours and also drybags for your camera. When we were fully prepared we went into the water. It all was very safe and good. And we saw so many dolphins!!! We could get really close and see them very good. They played hide and seek and we went after them. There was no hurry to do stuff, Matt just asked what we wanted to do most and then we did that. We saw a lot of seals as well, also one in the water which came very close and was so cute! It was our first sea kayaking experience and we liked it so much! Thank you Matt (and Kim!) for such a wonderful morning!

Spent a morning in Kaikoura on the half day tour with my boyfriend and Matt as our guide. Had a fantastic time - I had no previous experience of kayaking but Matt was a great teacher and took us on a fantastic tour - can't believe how close we were to the seals and the winter scenery was stunning (as mentioned in other reviews - don't let the fact it's winter put you off - the gear is toasty warm, the views spectacular).

Would recommend it highly as a great way to see the amazing Kaikoura coastline and its beautiful wildlife and I wouldn't hesitate about taking another tour if I ever end up back Kaikoura way (it's definitely given me the bug to go paddling again - always a good sign - but any future experience elsewhere would be hard pushed to beat this one!).

Wow. And that doesn't even come close to describing the experience I've just had. Simon picked me up at the i-Site at 12.20pm and mentioned that we could go one way to see the seal colony, but that he'd also seen a pod of dolphins about 2km offshore and would I like to try to view them if we could? After about a micro-second of thought, of course I said yes! After a great briefing over the important points (like how to make sure my camera stayed dry, oh and how to paddle properly ... ;-) ), we paddled out and within about five minutes had spotted the pod. Along the way we saw the world's smallest species of penguin, but really that was nothing compared to the main event ... The first smaller pod greeted us within about twenty minutes of paddling and then we were off - a few minutes of hard paddling and we were right in the middle of them! Back flips, swim-bys, general showing off as only Dusky Dolphins know how! In all, with a bit of paddling in between, we reckon we were with them for about an hour - Just incredible - and to think Simon hadn't seen any for about a month and I only booked on this last minute ...
All in all a truly awesome experience and made all the better for the excellent company and obvious enthusiasm Simon had for his work!

It was a very good time. Guide was very knowledgable, strict when he needed to get our attention, and very clear on his instructions. His knowledge about seals was very good and was interesting to hear him talk about it. His name was Patty. Yeah it was very good. Only complaint might be the price was a bit high at $90.

Reviewed about 9 years ago

Kaikoura Kayaks responds:

Thanks for your feedback Kelly and we are stoked that you had a good time out with Paddy, he's a bit of a laugh aye....
Sorry to hear that you thought the price was a little high for our half day "Seal Kayaking" tour. We have had a look at what other companys are charging for a half day guided kayaking tour and the range is $85.00 to $95.00 and most companys don't guarantee seeing Seals or any wild life. With that in mind we feel that our pricing is pretty standard as with other companys, but on our half day guided kayaking tours you are guaranteed to see "Fur Seals", have chance encounters with Dusky Dolphins and come accross Blue Penguins, Albatross and a host of other bird life. "Seal Kayaking" in Kaikoura is one of the best ways to view wild life form a kayak in the country.

This was absolutely fantastic! I was a bit worried because I have not kayaked much before, but the boats were very stable even in the ocean swell and the paddling was not overly strenuous. We saw two separate seal colonies; some of the big seals were playing around in the water only a couple of meters from the kayaks! Also, we saw about half a dozen Blue Penguins in the water. I did 2 days personal instruction on sea kayaking during late January 2011. Most of the time was spent on different types of self rescue and rolling but you can adjust the training to suit your particular needs.

The whole team were very helpful and friendly. I thought the instructors were very professional and also good at adjusting the instruction to fit your level of experience. It was very helpful having someone pick out your weak points and help you overcome them.

The quality of the equipment provided was very good and anything that you needed was available. You can bring your own bits of kit if you have them and borrow others.

The training facilities were very good and being able to use a pool to practice made a huge difference in how quickly I was able to progress. We also used a training video to provide an overview of what we were going to cover that day.

The trip around the ocean is beautiful - around 5km. My friend and I loved bobbing around on the waves but the kayaks are really good and we never felt like capsizing (my secret fear). And there were so many seals!! Swimming beside us and lazing all over the rocks. Our only regret was not bringing a camera.

Also would recommend hats and LOTS of sunscreen. And a hot shower at the end to soothe your aching muscles!

We were fully equipped to stay dry and warm throughout the entire trip. Worth every penny!... Got some great photo shots too with the ocean, snowy mtns, and green pastures :)

This was our first go at sea kayaking and it proved to be an excellent introduction. The small nerves at heading out to sea were calmed by an excellent guide, and because we had a small group we were able to get a close look at a number of seals along the rocks.

It is true that if you just want to look at a seal you can see them from shore (even from your car if you want) - but from the kayaks you have a much more intimate experience, with much greater chances for variety.

Loved the day, highly recommend this tour.

This was a great way to begin the day. Beautiful weather, great scenery and the chance to see the seals up close. The guide was clear and explained everything before we entered the water. We felt safe and secure and kinda like we knew what we were doing even though we'd never kayaked before. On the odd occasion when we were a little too close to something the guide gave really clear instructions so all was good. We would recommend this, especially as an early morning experience. The weather was awful and too dangerous to be kayaking around rocks, and we were not given the option to cancel or at least reschedule. The kayaking was tough and ultimately useless because the tour goes right next to the free public seal colony. We were jealous of the people on land who didnt pay and saw the exact same thing. The brochure is filled with puffery because it was not true at all. The guides had to antagonize the seals in order for them to play with us. DO NOT GO ON THIS TRIP. It is extremely OVERPRICED and you can just go to the free colony on your own time.

Kaikoura Kayaks responds:

THESE GUYS WERE REALLY HARD WORK! We warned them about the weather that afternoon over the ph & suggested they go earlyer as sea conditions were much better, but they didn't want to change to the 12:30pm from 4:30pm.Upon pick up they were told by the guides that the tour would be hard paddling with hardly any seals & asked if they still wanted to go, which they agreed on.A 2nd guide was sorted for them so they had 2 guides looking after them & were the only couple on the tour. OMG!

Went on a guided seal trip though it was stormy. The weather was so bad that you would have seen more from land. Good guide and cool experience though.

Matt taught me to surf my sea kayak as we had to do a shorter version of the seal tour due to the weather conditions. He's a great coach.

Bad weather, awesome guides, great gear. Saw some seals but not as many as on a fine day. If you are a single traveller they will take 1 person out for an extra $10. You can also get freedom rentals.
