No where as spectacular as the train journey from Auckland to Wellington. Plus breakdowns meant we were running 3 hours late and consequently were travelling at least 2 and a half hours in the dark missing the scenery we booked the trip to see.
Can’t recommend this on.
Train is pretty comfortable, but even one way was too expensive for what the brochure said about the scenic experience. Good coffee though.
We got the train from Springfield rather than paying to go through the suburbs and Christchurch which was a good idea. Enjoyed the trip, great views, especially from the observation carriages but then you could not listen to the commentary. There was no notification that the train was running over an hour late on return - a notice could have been posted at the station.
Best train trip I have experienced in my life so far. Stunning views!! Would definitely recommend this to any traveller in New Zealand as it is really a unique journey.

I travelled from Greymouth to Christchurch. A great and comfortable journey over the New Zealand Alps. Open air carriage is perfect for taking photos. Not a cheap adventure though.
Comfortable carriages with clean windows for taking photos. Return trip seating allowed viewing of both sides. Friendly staff, excellent quality food (best steak pie in New Zealand), shame that the audio system is not inside and outside.
Mixed feelings. Did the return trip, outward our carriage had no commentary, lots of photo opportunities. On return, less people and the driver did not want to stop at all.
Very good sight of mountains and rivers and the most comfortable train ever. Price high.
Beautiful landscapes but expensive.
Scenic rail trip. Christchurch to Greymouth.
Christchurch to Greymouth
great trip from Christchrch to Greymouth. Greymouth doesnt sound like such a good place to visit but we had a great time. A wonderful cycle trail, an awesome glow-worm cave tour with a zipline and some great rinforest kayaking

Arthur's Pass Tranz Alpine. Very scenic, spoilt by the fog.

Scenic trip Greymouth to Christchurch. Well worth the money and well organised.

Very good trip.

A must for all train buffs - best on a fine and clear day!
I have waited many years to travel on this train - a wonderful experience that every tourist should have on their 'bucket list'.
Very poor service, dangerous to leave luggage with them - you will get it back soaked!!
Easily booked online. Due to earthquake were helpful in changing railway journey arrangements.
They mixed our tickets up but outside of that the trip was fantastic.
Lovely views, pleasant staff, bit pricey but had to do it!!

Beautiful scenery and informative commentary.
Superb Introduction to New Zealand for us - travelled from Christchurch to Greymouth and back on our first full day here - really enjoyed it.

Rode all the way from Greymouth to Christchurch. Great views for most of the trip (last bit into Christchurch is boring). Excellent views up to Arthurs Pass and then beyond. Some excellent photo opportunities wrecked by barriers erected on some bridges. They are no barriers on any of the other great train rides in NZ so why here? Shortly after the start of the most spectacular part of the journey I gave up my prize position in the viewing car to a young couple for some shots. My politeness and consideration was rewarded by them, and others, hogging the good positions. I tried to take some photos and ended up with great shots of hands, backs of heads. Moral is that if you get a good position don't be considerate like me, be selfish like others. This had not been an issue on the other train journeys I had. People had shared the best positions. With this train being so popular why not another viewing car?
Great train ride.
Recommend staying on the West Coast at least overnight before taking the return rail journey
Unfortunately if rained all the way back from Greymouth to Christchurch so even though the weather was overcast going it was a disappointing trip.
train overcrowded, not particularly clean. Inadequate observation cars, very late both ways. Expensive for what you get. A bus would have been better.
A nice scenery.
Good day trip - only need to do one way as return is identical including info given.
Scenery is absolutely amazing. If you have driven Arthur's Pass, I wouldn't spend the money on the train. (Quite expensive).
Good train trip through the mountains. Nice views.
I loved it! Wish the outdoor car was bigger as I went on a beautful day and the car was packed the whole time. Met and exceeded my expectations.
The seats were comfortable, the views were spectacular, and the food from the onboard cafe was tasty. My only complaint is that the viewing car was too small. So it was hard to take pictures sometimes.
A must do!
Great mountain scenery.
Beautiful scenery, but train broke down so 3hr delay on journy. Very late back.
It's great to see the landscape passing by, the TranzAlpine was a bit too crowded though.
Gorgeous scenic train route with knowledgable crew. Not cheap and don't expect it to be fast. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the amazing views around Arthurs Pass.
Good way to go across the coast and price is reasonable at wintertime.
The Fat Controller on the Tranzalpne Train needs to take a chill pill.
It was good weather and was great trip!
The tranzalpine train journey is beautiful. Easy to make reservations on the internet.
A lot of money in bad weather - not up to the expectations.
Bad weather, didn't go through the high mountains, just through the tunnel. Not up to expectations.
Not worth it - scenery is pretty but unremarkable. The open air carriage was very crowded and uncomfortable.
It was cloudy, but on a sunny day it may have been a 10.
Crowded. Preferred the scenery in other parts of NZ.
Very nice, but I booked the tickets through nzrail.com and had some trouble.

Was a bit late coming back, but that was ok.

Really good witty commentary.
Scenery was amazing, quite good value for money. Cheap in comparison to trains in the UK.
Good, but expensive. Bus is half the price and pretty similar scenery.
Didn't quite meet our expectations, but the weather was poor when we went.
Should be an 11/10. Brilliant.
Did not like the seating arrangement and crappy weather did not help the scenery.
Great, but too long return.
Good trip. fabulous scenery.
Bit of a rip off - train is a bit tired!
