Chose Mitre Peak Cruises because they have a smaller boat and certainly was not dissapointed. Less people meant it was easier to get around and get that perfect picture. Based on what the other larger boats were doing we went further out of the Sound and got much closer to waterfalls and wildlife. Commentary from the Captain was very entertaining and informative. If you are looking for a cruise company, pick these guys.

We picked the 8:55am cruise as it is $10 cheaper and we camped at Milford Sound. The weather was not great: raining and foggy so it was not great to start but it cleared up afterwards. The boat was one of the small ones which was good to take pictures and see everything. We came really close to the seals and the boat stayed long enough for us to take videos and pictures. Great experience but better when sunny and clear.

Great operator and nice crew, who turned an overcast and chilly day into a great experience. Did not get to see the top of the peaks, but plenty of wildlife - seals, dolphins, and a couple of Fiordland penguins.
Ship is quite small, but there's plenty of space to move about. Back on shore, we looked at the crowded, "tourist factory" ships from other companies, and we thought we really had made the right choice.

Small boats so less people onboard. But be careful, they won't hesitate to lie to you about the weather forecast to fill a morning cruise, even if it is foggy and it is expected to clear up in the afternoon. The cruise is totally amazing if it is clear, but don't go if there is fog! You won't see half of the mountains!

What a fantastic cruise. After our original booking with largest cruise company in area (RJ) was cancelled due to broken boat, we rebooked with Mitre Peak and had a FABULOUS day. Smaller boat, only 45 people on board, all independent travellers and no large groups from tour buses (which go on the larger company cruise). Small boat could go right to edge of cliffs - right under waterfalls and up close to seals on rocks. Perfect amount of commentary, not to much but just enough to give you the main points of interest and leave you to enjoy the scenery. Highly recommended!
Cruises all go for same duration and see the same scenery ... Mitre Peak was definitely value for money compared to other companies.

Were rapt to see lots of bottlenose dolphins, seals, and the rare Fiordland crested penguin. Just missed a whale that was there the day before. The area is stunning. For this company they have friendly staff, but boat is small so expect it to be very rocky if the wind/waves pick up - which unfortunately it did for us. It got pretty rough & to be honest in hindsight we wished we hadn't gone out (not a great idea for them to still go out in rough conditions for such 'consumer' cruises) as a lot of people went green, & the kids got really sick (ginger etc wasn't enough). This totally ruined out next day as I had booked doubtful sounds and paid for it, but the entire family of 6 couldn't go as they were so scarred by the sea sickness of this Milford trip. This boat/company is really not reccommended for those prone to sea sickness.

Fantastic cruise. Weather was bad, even by Milford standards, with 200mm rain in 2 days. Waterfalls everywhere, wind was howling down the Sound, it was Milford at its stormiest but was great because of that. The skipper & staff were excellent & very friendly. We were invited back when the weather eased so we went the next day when there was space on a tour and saw the other side of Milford: sunny, light wind, few waterfalls. Going with a small company on a small boat is the best way to do it, and we would go with them again.

We took the last boat of the day at 4:30 and there were hardly any boats on Milford Sound. Of course, when you do that boat, you can't go to the underwater observatory, but they actually let us go on a boat in the morning for free if we booked the underwater observatory. So we got a quiet rainy afternoon and a sunny morning on Milford Sound for the price of one! The boats go all the way out to the Tasman Sea. On one of the trips we saw lots of dolphins, swimming on our bow wave. Neither of the boats we were on was even remotely crowded.

My husband and I were on our honeymoon and despite being born & living in NZ for near on 40 years we had not been to Milford Sound. Firstly we had excellent advice in Te Anau about which company to choose. The cruise was absolutely magnificent, Graeme the skipper's commentary was very informative and we had a very enjoyable encounter with some dolphins. We had a relatively fine day but were invited back to share in a further cruise the next day following a storm that was coming through that night as Graeme advised the waterfalls after a storm would be amazing. We were very tempted but unfortunately our timetable did allow this. Many thanks to Graeme and Simon from our Mitre Peak Cruise!!

We took the cruise on the end of November and forgot the camera in the car.
At the end of the cruise at Mitre Peak, in a natural way, they offered us something which was a complete surprise to us and to everybody who heard the story – "bring your camera and jump on the next cruise, or come back in a few days, and join the cruise on a stand-by basis".
We did, and took the cruise on a rainy day and had a great adventure.
A few days later, after packing our luggage before leaving Fiordland, our hosts, Kevin and Keiko Murdoch (from Keiko's Cottages in Te Anau) called Miter Peak and asked about the weather. It was a clear day, the first after two weeks. The first clear day for us in Fiordland. They "convinced" us to stay one more day by telling us that we're invited to see the Milford Sound again, this time in a clear day. We unpacked and headed to Milford again. We hiked to the Key Summit for the second time, and then came to the cruise. We were received with a big smile, and we had a great experience, this time in a bright day.
You can of course quote our Email to you.
At Miter Peak you made us very happy and we thank you very very much!
We've met in New Zealand beautiful views and beautiful people. There is no doubt you and the Mitre Peak crew are one of the major reasons for this observation.

It's a very wonderful trip to travel with Mitre Peak to Milford Sound although half of the trip was in a bad weather. Heavy rains gave us a great view of waterfalls. Both the coach and cruise were nice and comfortable. Coach driver Allan with good humour definately added lots value to the trip. Thanks for your service. Highly recommend.

With perfect weather and only the two of us (and Roger the captain) on board for the morning cruise of Milford Sound, it was indeed something special.
Roger was particularly accommodating and a wealth of information about the Sound, which really added to our enjoyment of the experience.
The fly/cruise/fly Milford Sound experience was in fact the highlight of our honeymoon.

Of course we picked a day it was peeing with rain - buckets of it. However Jesse and hostess (Mandy? from Canada) were on time and excellent. Look the coach is very comfortable they provide snacks along the way, there are good stops too cos its a long trip! But well worth it for the views. Sadly the weather was too bad for the boat so we only got the coach trip and a gazilion BIG waterfalls. After lunch and a boat refund we saw a helicopter scenic trip video on the way back plus a local movie - Worlds Fastest Indian. Great day though and a great team. We'll go again when we can get on the boat and we WILL use Mitre Peak Cruises. Thanks guys. Stu & Viv, Gulf Harbour, Auckland NZ.

September 2008, we have made a coach - cruise - fly excursion with Mitre Peak from Queenstown. The luxiury coach was right on time but the hostess was prevented. However, Jesse, the driver showed us that he doesn't need a hostess . Besides a good driver he showed an excellent host and gave us a great deal of information. After we have a great cruise we flew with a plane of Air Fjordland over the snowy mountain peaks back to Queenstown. Finaly a taxi drove us back to the citycenter. The trip was very worthwhile and perfectly arranged! Special compliments to Jesse.

Smallest boat in Milford Sound so they could take us directly under some waterfalls. Not too many people so there was lots of space for taking photo's.

Brilliant boat trip. Smallest boat of all the options and proved to be cheapest too. Only 13 of us on the boat and it felt very intimate. We helped ourselves to great soup and were really impressed with the whole operation.

The service was good. Although everyone told us that Doubtful Sound was amazing, we preferred Milford Sound.

Milford Sound is really nice and the boat they use seems smaller than the others.

Great boat ride. One of the best places to visit in NZ. Very touristy place but well worth it.

We chose them because it was a small boat giving us a personalised service and lots of space.

We had a brilliant day. We were on an early trip and there were fewer people. Being on a smaller boat is also a bonus.

Don't take a bus to Milford, take a car so you can stop anywhere you like. Boat cruise was good, we saw dolphins! Not too expensive either.

Was a bit cloudy so might have missed some of the landscape. Really good company.

An enjoyable ride, although lack of rain meant that the waterfalls weren't at their best! The commentary was good on the whole. The sandflies were 'ravenous'1

Small boat to Milford Sound. Stops enough at wildlife and important points. Very good info without talking too much.

Blessed with a beautiful sunny day, this trip was heavenly - scenery absolutely jaw dropping, including the drive up from Te Anau. But sandflies a real pest!!
