The Wilderness team is certainly the best choice for camper van rental in New Zealand. That's from my experience and talking to other travelers we met on our trip. Our van was in great condition and fully equipped. The service from support staff before we went was really helpful - free guide on places to go and sites to stay at, quick and helpful replies by email on specific questions about the van and possible routes. This help at the planning stage really allows you to get the most out of your holiday once you arrive. The Wilderness vans can go anywhere. Either stay at the full facility holiday parks where you can plug in and use their power, some of the minimum facility Department of Conservation sites are in spectacularly wild locations, or just freedom camp where you please. The Wilderness vans are great for any of these options.

Great experience all round. We picked up in Christcurch with no fuss or ceremony, just efficient handover.
Three weeks ( and 3,500 km) later we handed back in Auckland - an even more laidback and efficient process.
In between, just one problem - the cab a/c system had a wobble and would only work on full power. A phone call to Wilderness identified that the front passenger had kicked a plug in the footwell and so had become loose. A quick wiggle of the plug and all was back to normal.
I would highly recommend Wilderness - not the cheapest but a great range of RVs in excellent condition and great staff.

Absolutely fabulous company to deal with. Superb motor home, spotlessly clean and well equipped. Good value for money compared to other companies. Excellent staff, welcoming and helpful. Would not hesitate to use them again.

My wife and I hired the Wilderness Lyseo T734 by Burstner. Sound vehicle mechanically, minor appliance issues along the way. Post-holiday checkout uncomplicated and reasonable. Campable app was relatively user friendly. Camp sites outstanding for standalone motorhomes. Toured the South Island, loved it. Looking forward to returning to NZ someday...

Selected Wilderness because the offered a fixed bed van ideal for 2 people albeit expensive. Greeted with enthusiasm and camper explained in detail however once I mentioned I was using my own insurance being used the tone changed. For 50 days at $69 per day ($3,500) its an expensive offering when I could get a similar package on line for $750 but this decision would come back to bite me. On the road the van was comfortable but not without its problems. Invertor didn't work from day one and after 4 different visits to repair agents I gave up, cupboards and bed that needed fixing along with annoying noises on most roads. Easy to maintain but not much space inside. I managed to drive into a car park that damaged the roof and had to stump up $7,500 on parts which in UK would cost half of that - still waiting for invoiced breakdown. Buy NZ frenzy, have a good Sat Nav (don't rely on Google maps/phone) get a NZMCA member ship before you travel (Its $220 but you get this back on one crossing of cook straits - Use a NZ postal address otherwise you won't get), use Golf clubs for cheap parking, download the free apps such as Wilderness/NZMCA/Campermate/Campable etc. let other drivers past but don't expect a thank you, Enjoy taking to locals and just take in those views. Food/drink pricing similar to UK but the various attractions can be expensive. Research and find loads of free stuff and save the money for Shotover etc. Loved bay of Islands but not $50 a head for the Treaty grounds. Rotorua and Queenstown if you must but tourist traps so bear in mind it is the country and its people that offer the best experience. Try if you can to master the Town names but remember if you get it wrong then so do they when they come to UK and try and pronounce Birmingham - none of us are perfect so embrace the differences

Lovely clean and well stocked van. Great service on planning our trip and answering questions before we arrived. Supported us whilst on the road with a water issue. Would definitely use them again.
Only an 8 because 1) clean water seemed to be used really quickly 2) having to deal with (LPG, grey water) everything before a 14:30 drop off means you can't do anything else that day.
Overall great rental experience.
