Absolutely great commentary, outstanding journey
A nice train ride into the gorge, with lots of photo opportunities. The trains are the old 'Mitsus', since new ones do not fit through the tunnels. Lots of side information while you just 'sit' and enjoy the ride.
Despite the cloudy weather, this was enjoyable. The commentary was available all over the train (even outside), and there were ample photo stops/points.
Everyday from Dunedin Railway Station to Middlemarch and back - beautiful journey up an impressively built railway.
Go all the way to Middlemarch. Stunning scenery. Great staff.
It should be a scenic route, but at that time we had seen enough of other much more scenic landscapes and places.
Touristy and at $89 quite expensive. I enjoyed the scenery but something I can't put my finger on was missing. Maybe an authentic train would have helped.
A not to miss experience! A relaxing way to see the beautiful scenery.
Nice train but too expensive and no real spectacular view for such a price.

Excellent value for money, good service and care.
Historic train, good experience and a nice track.
Perfect guide and very friendly and helpful office staff.
Beautiful trip, a bit expensive for what was offered.
A very good service.

Very good trip. We would love to see more railways in New Zealand.

Excellent trip and commentary.
Good trip, very enjoyable.
A really unusual and spectacular way to see the gorge country from Dunedin. It was a relaxing experience. Plenty of food and drink, timely stops and the volunteers were just great. Commentary was also excellent. Well worth doing. Added bonus were the quaint stops with mini markets selling wares. Highly recommend.

Good day out.
Great halfday trip there and back. Great views and interesting commentary along the way.
Excellent service and facilities - met very friendly and helpful people on train. Scenery amazing.
Nice trip, good explanations.
Not really a great money-spending activity for someone backpacking. Was interesting but if the weather is bad it is not worth it.
Wonderful trip, good service, booking office helpful.

Fantastic scenery and helpful information.
A beautiful half day return train trip to Central Otago along a river with marvellous landscape.
All I can say is WOW!!!!!!. Absolutely great views in the gorge. When train climbed out of the gorge and travelled on the plateau, I felt like I was travelling along the top of the world. Thank goodness for digital cameras as I took about 150 photos. Would be even better experience with observation carriage. Train stops at great locations for photos. Photographers shared the photo opportunities whilst train was moving. Can't say that with the people on that other popular ride, TranzAlpine. Bunch of selfish people there. See my review for that ride.
I've been waiting years to do this trip and it was so well worth the wait. The Taieri Gorge is lovely and even if the broom is a pest it's beautiful in full bloom. I took far too many photos. It would be great if the train had a proper observation car (I encountered one on a fabulous train trip in Peru) as the platforms at the ends of the carriages got a bit crowded and taking photos through windows is never really satisfactory. But there were several good photo stops and the crew were very helpful and informative. I really recommend this trip.
Well worth while commentary + great views. Value for money, great for train buffs.
Well done - great commentary - both humorous and informative.
Great train ride.
Nice view, good price
Beautiful views; nicely conserved old train to travel in. Bit pricey for its service and delivery.
Pleasant experience, informative, must have travel in old style coach, buffet on board - scenery fanatstic.

Absolutely fantastic. Train great, scenery amazing, reasonable price.
Not recommended for Swis because we have a lot of these kind of excursions.
We liked it very much but the commentary was only in English.
Spectacular scenery, best tourist train trip I have done. Why does New Zealand not make the most of a good rail system for every day passengers, especially along the coasts?
Very interesting ride. We wondered how it could have been built. Afterwards, take the drive from Palmerston to Middlemarch over high country and see a huge gold mine that is still working.
Excellent from start to finsish. Amazing engineering that works just for a 'hobby'.
To long for small children and nothing special for us. Too expensive but good for railways lovers - others should spend their money somewhere else.
A great experience in a beautyful landscape! We enjoyed the traintrip on board this historic composition! Several bridges, tunnels and historic sites along the railwayline made this journey unforgetable!
Lots of good information and a very relaxing trip.
Great train journey.
Very nice. We enjoyed this trip.
Very good - pleasant condition. Good commentary.
$80 p/p and kids are free. Spectacular. The stop at Middlemarch was a bit of disappointment.
Well run and informative. A good afternoon trip.
Rainy day but lots of useful info by train manager over speaker system. History & description of scenery etc.
Fantastic journey into a narrow gorge.
Wonderful trip. Everything on time, stunning scenery, awesome engineering.
Trip was nice, information guide good. Only thing was that our trip was delayed due to previous waiting for cruise ship and it was short.
A very good trip - spacious coaches and friendly, informed staff.
Nice trip but should be warmer inside the train in winter.
Nice views but a really cold train in winter.
Good insight into Central Otago. Beautiful scenery, nice relaxing day.
Fantastic commentary. Exceptional ride.
