Very friendly service nice clean car brought the car back Apex checked the out everything and was fine they checked the petrol gauge and said brilliant all good !
Week later and email arrived saying l hadn't filled the car up enough l was $13. And some cents short but they have waivered the $25 fill up charge and they said they have charged my card and the money will be taken out .on my opinion they have made me out to be untrustworthy and l had left more petrol in on the gauge from when l picked it up .l haven't got a leg to stand on to fight my corner but all l can say steer clear
Regards Mel
Can't believe they did this !

Charged the full 2000 NZD damage excess for an accident that all parties (including Apex, in writing) agree was not my fault. Absolute worst case scenario. (Yes, the contract is written that way, so it will happen to you, too.)

The staff in APEX Victoria St Auckland Central were nice and that's good. The problem I had with this company is the van we rented. We got a Hyndai iMax which was very weak and slow. It took forever to rev up the speed and mostly stuck to 40 mph even if I full-stepped on the pedal! Imagine what we had to go through driving this van in Coromandel where roads were mostly uphill! We always had a line of cars stuck behind us coz this van can't just speed up! It was an automatic van but it took forever for the gear to shift and mostly sounded like it was gonna blow before it shifts. Crazy.

Aside from that, locking/unlocking the van was a hit or miss. Had to do it a couple times before it does what's it's asked to do.
The sliding doors were also a hit and miss. Sometimes it opens, sometimes it doesn't. Always had to work around it before it works.

When I called them regarding the issue, I was told that the van didn't have problems when others were renting it. Well maybe the issue only started after the last customer returned it or whatever. Vehicles should all be checked before passing it on to another customer. We didn't feel safe at all.

Because this van was too slow, we were late in returning it at 5pm and they close at that time so we called and luckily the staff agreed to return it the next morning free of charge. Appreciated that but I know we deserved it after all the trouble we had to deal with the van.

Not happy with the experience we had with Apex rentals. The vehicle we hired was very slow. It took forever to 70km let alone 100km in a 100km zone. The battery went flat twice and the mud guard on tyre was rubbing on tyre. If I could, I would give this a -0

We choose the $2,000 deductible and got a stone chip in the windshield on the 2nd day of a 3-week rental. Apex personnel were very honest and reported back to me that the repair cost was just $50. I received a $1,950 credit on my card. The car ran beautifully throughout the trip. Plus, Apex is a very honest company.

Apex was able to hire us a last minute car (within 48 hours) on a one way rental from Queenstown to Christchurch. The associate we dealt with in Queenstown didn't have the kindest attitude, but her efficiency was solid. The car we were assigned was clean, but we could definitely feel the wear & tear on it, as it took its time to get going again after any full stop or yield and sometimes sounded like it was running on dead batteries. The associate in Christchurch was kind and made the drop-off process easy.

I had a very bad experience with APEX Christchurch. The staff that I had to deal with was horrible. She treated me like rubbish. She was so rude to me (I am Asian). She also requested me to do the paper test. And she refused to get me the car by saying that I got one wrong answer. However, she talked to the next European customer nicely and didn't request him to do the paper test.

This is racist, double standard and unacceptable. I don't know how the Company trains their staff.
If APEX requires the customer to do the paper test, the Company should mention on the website or on the booking.

Anyway I returned to the Airport and rented a car with Entreprise. The staff was friendly and helpful. The service was excellent. The process was quick and easy.

Worst experience of my life.

Their cars are not road worthy in the slightest, despite what they claim. Their staff are incredibly rude and their only aim is to get you out of the car yard as soon as possible. The girl serving us was offended that i wanted to make sure there was a spare tyre in our boot. She said to me "what, you don't trust us?".

No, no i don't.

Our first car, a Toyota Camry, had warped brake discs which caused the car to vibrate uncontrollably when braking.
We took the car back and they replaced it with another Camry that had the exact same problem. We took the second car back as well and they said they would replace it again. While filling out the paper work i noticed that the registration on the third car was the same as the first car we received. I asked them if they had fixed the braking issue on that car and they said they didn't bother because in their minds there is nothing wrong with it.

We refused the car and after much arguing we eventually cancelled our contract with them under the grounds that they would not supply us with a safe car. They refused our refund request and we went next door to Go rentals who were fantastic.

Save your money and don't put your holiday at risk. We lost 2 days worth of our holiday dealing with these idiots, don't do what we did.

Considering renting a car with Apex NZ? Purchasing premium insurance?
In the unfortunate event of minor damage to the car, you might not be covered!
𝐀𝐩𝐞𝐱 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲! You'll sign a one-sided contract!
“In case of accident …. no refund for the unused hire period and the provision of a replacement vehicle shall be at the owner’s sole discretion”
Please find clause number 11.3 in the contract.

I took a 2.5 months vacation to travel to New Zealand.
Rented a car with Apex for 60 days, purchased their most premium insurance “Zero Excess”. The package cost me about 4,000 NZD.
10 days into the rental period the car was involved in a minor/cosmetic accident.
The car was in good driving and mechanical condition.
Apex hung up the phone to a police officer that provided me with the statement they've asked for because he ruled in my favour.
Apex's representative told us over the phone, immediately without consideration neither looking at the event nor the car that: Apex decided to tow the car, won’t reimburse for the rest of the rental period, won’t offer a replacement vehicle and put me on the no-hire list!
Apex took advantage of my tourist status. They didn’t care I was stuck in the middle of nowhere, no buses, nowhere to spend the night - just "Read your contract and clear your belongings before we take the vehicle".

Apex ripped me off 4000 NZD and left me hung out to dry.
They don’t answer my emails and refuse to make contact.
Taking a legal approach is not my first choice. Apex, as a corporate business, probably has better lawyers and more money to invest.
Looking for advice,
Thanks!

Be aware of this fraudulent company! Car was returned with a full tank of petrol and they claimed that they had to top it up. Make sure you have evidence of the petrol level when you pick up and drop off the car. They will try to squeeze money out of you anyway they can. It doesn't matter that it was accepted at drop off, they will charge your card a month later.

The only reason I’m not giving fewer stars is because the shuttle driver was friendly and helpful.

We arrived from the airport to the Auckland Airport depot and saw rather hopefully that there are 8 customer services desks. Unfortunately only 3 of them were attended and one was doing returns. Unfortunately there was already a queue ahead of me. The staff were processing customers at the rate of around 1 per 20 minutes. With four people ahead of me it took just over an hour’s wait before I got my rental car. There were 5 people behind me in the queue, so the poor person at the end was facing a 2 hour wait time.

Extraordinary.

Got picked up from the airport great service. The rental car ford focus was ok but had issues as jurked alot. It only started doing it when on the drive north, I mentioned this issue when we dropped off, they told me it was the cvt transmission and they all did it. Something very important to keep in mind is that Apex cars are in very poor mechanical condition compared to other car rental companies (in my opinion). If they suffer a problem based on this condition while the car is in your possession there is a good chance you'll be held liable and it will be expensive. I'd think carefully about this before renting from here.

Our experience with Apex was mixed. We first rented a Toyota Corolla in Queenstown with a drop off in Nelson 2 weeks later. The car was clean and performed well. The staffs in Queenstown and Nelson were also efficient and helpful.

Our second rental was on the North Island with a pick up and drop off in Auckland. Customer service was adequate as was the car, which this time was a much older Nissan. We entered this transaction knowing the car would be an older model with considerably more mileage than the Corolla. Therefore, the multiple dings on the body were not a surprise and indeed the interior was actually in pretty good shape. On the other hand, the treads on the front two tires were at best adequate and there was very little tread at all on the rear tires. This was very disconcerting given the twisting nature of New Zealand roads and the repeated warnings that the roads were even more treacherous when wet.

Again, we accepted the dings and other flaws (e.g. the radio wouldn't shut off) as part of the deal. We would have even accepted a breakdown along the way - after all, the car had over 140000 kms. However, we did not bargain for a car that was clearly unsafe due to the condition of the tires. And we certainly would not have accepted it had we discovered the problem before embarking.

Moreover, while the person who checked the car in on our return certainly agreed that the tires were bad, we did not get the impression that he was going to do anything about it.

Use Apex regularly and service/quality of vehicles was top notch. Had a slight issue last time with my booking on line as their system had something different. Was fixed reasonably quick so no issues. Highly recommended. Rented a car over Xmas from their competition,"Lucky Rentals"and the service/vehicle was abysmal. Apex is far superior.

Our pick up was Auckland Airport, car had not been cleaned inside there was sand and rubbish throughout, dent on the roof of the car that was not noted down. When we went to drop car offer were left waiting over half an hour in a line with 6 others whom had been waiting longer, as the staff only tended to the customers picking up their rentals, due to a flight we had to catch we had to leave keys on desk and proceed to airport. I have tried for the last two days to contact the Auckland Airport branch and either get hung up on or put on. The staff have very poor English and absolutely no customer service skills. Will never use apex again

Arrived at Queenstown city apex car rentals and decided to try our luck at the store (as opposed to booking online). The girl at the counter, said she didn't have the type of car we were after at that time, but she could get it from the queenstown airport store. She was willing to drive there and pick up the car for us, if we waited for a few hours. The car arrived earlier than we had anticipated. The car was not a FWD like we had asked, but it was a very clean, newer model RAV4 so no complaints there. The car was comfortable and easy to drive. Dropping the car off was also hassle-free and they even had a shuttle to drop us back to the airport.

The customer service staff (Hebe) was inexperienced and could not find our booking initially. She actually asked us to go through her list ourselves! Luckily we have a printout and I gave her our booking number.
Then she wanted us to take a test to check if we are familiar with local traffic rules. Before that she has already made us signed a declaration that we have received the traffic rule booklet from her. She did not clarify if the test was a country or company policy but anyway again she was not entirely clear about the rules herself. After a red eyed flight, it was rather stressful to take the test especially after she warned that if we fail it the second time, we will not be able to rent the car!
After crossing this hurdle, we finally got the car and the GPS. However she did not bother to test the GPS and unfortunately it was a faulty one. Her colleague has to help us secure a decent working one after the sixth or more attempt!
Overall it was a rather unpleasant experience to rent from Apex and I would not recommend it.

We rented last February in Nelson having flown in from British Columbia, Canada ...staff in the office were friendly and helpful as we picked up our car. My only concern at the time was that one of the tires was very worn.
Fast forward ten days and the unthinkable happened. While driving in a fairly remote area north of Takaka, a person pulled out of a farm driveway straight into the side of our car as we were travelling down the highway, pushing us into the opposite lane where we came to a stop a couple of hundred yards down the road. Although we sustained shock and substantial internal bruising/soreness from the seatbelts, we escaped "serious" injury. We phoned the number to contact at Apex (at first getting no answer) and were told there was nothing they could do for us until business hours the next day ... in Nelson, 2 hours south. We were then faced with having to find our own way back, in spite of our distressed state of mind and the fact that our rental car was a write-off. We were very fortunate though, in that the local police took it upon themselves to drive us back to a motel in Nelson along with all our belongings.
The next day we attended the Apex office in Nelson. Staff there were very sympathetic and assured us there should be restitution of our collision deductible ("excess") because the other driver was totally at fault and had been charged by police. We picked up another car even though we had to just stay put locally for a number of days until we felt physically able to travel.
A few days later, a claims manager explained that because of the NZ "no fault" type of insurance system, only "in some instances" would restitution be possible. After 6 months of emailing & investigation we got absolutely nothing from Apex ... just the $500 bill for our excess. This in spite of the fact that Apex was totally paid out for their own deductible by IAG. Lesson: only buy full coverage on NZ rentals even though the cost to do so will be much greater!

We recently hired a car from Apex rentals in Queenstown Airport. We had a lovely lady collect us from the airport, we dealt with a fantastic customer services agent named Katie and the car did its job - it got us to and from the mountain.

Upon returning the car we had to drop the keys down a chute as it was an early morning drop off. (5am) As we dropped the keys in the chute we realized we had left our go pro camera in the car under the seat. (you could see the black handle still) Unfortunately we had to get on our plane and as it was so early there was no-one to speak to. We thought its OK we'll just call them when we land - which we did.

We were pushed from pillar to post for a total of 6 days! The manager made no effort to speak to us, poor Katie the lovely Customer services agent had to constantly relay messages from the unseen manager.

Its now 6 days later and we have finally been told 'it's not there!' which is funny because it was when we left the car!

I feel sad for the workers who are employed there- I hope they don't have anything taken from them.

As for the manager who thought it was OK to constantly shrug off our plight A managers job is to handle these situations with customers. The eventual email we received once the police and superiors were mentioned only go to show that there was some realization that our mater had been handled ineffectively.

If you wish to hire a car in Queenstown use another company!

We just finished our 71 days car rental with Apex, 10,000kms.

While we were researching about car rental in New zealand, we came across a lot of negative reviews about Apex. We, consciously, decided to choose Apex because the cost of rental was one-third compared to Hertz, Avis etc. We asked a lot of questions to them about the condition, make and year of their car. Apex staff patiently responded to all our questions

We are so pleased to write this review. Apex didn’t dispappoint us. We had a Toyota Corolla 2010, with 165000 miles on it when we picked up the car. I think Apex is comeptitive because they are very old player in the rental market, therefore they have old, but well maintained cars.

We didn’t have any issues with the Toyota at all. It worked in all road and weather conditions. After a month of rental, in the beginning of April, when we were in Wellington, we took the car to the Apex location in Wellington. We requested to do service check since we were going to drive it for another 50 days in South Island. The Wellington staff were very prompt and cooperative.

Overall, we are very satisfied with Apex vehicle and customer service. Would recommend to other travelers. It is well suited for people who are budget traveler.

Hired a Highlander from Apex as they were cheaper than elsewhere and would guarantee the model. I knew I would not be getting a new car, but had thought that the car would be clean and well maintained. However, car was overdue a service and the brakes were very suspect - park brake almost didnt work and had to stamp on the brakes hard to stop. Car was not clean and smelt.
Staff on pick up and drop off were disinterested in customers. We were left waiting whilst they stared at their screens for about 15 mins.
Shuttle to the airport took 35 mins to arrive !!! This was going to domestic, but the driver luckily said he would take us to international ... although he went to domestic 1st and picked up passengers. We nearly missed check in for our flight !!
Staff told us on pick up to full up the car at a nearby petrol station on drop off. Even gave us a map to it. We did this on return and found that this was the most expensive petrol station in NZ and was charging 10% more than anywhere else.

If you want cheap and dont care about the quality of the car, about customer service, or about nearly missing your flight, then Apex is for you.

I've typically rented from Apex because I realise that you get what you pay for, I was moving overseas and had sold my car so needing to get around I booked an Apex sh*tbox to do the job until I left.

The car was a 2014 Focus, I don't know how this thing descended to this level this fast but none the less it was cheap, the aircon smelt like old laundry but as I said you get what you pay for.

What really got me is I opted out of the insurance, I was covered but had a $2000 excess, no big deal I thought I'll drive carefully and it'll be fine.
Until someone backed into me causing very minor damage to the front bumper, they admitted fault left a note and got me a claim number.
The person at faults insurance company contacted me stating they were just waiting for the call from Apex to clear it all up, Apex refused and said that it wasn't the process due to the contract and would charge me instead. They could charge the offending persons insurance company, but they charged me instead.

So I am getting charged for damage I did not cause.

Apex is an embarrassment of a company. There is a reason why you google Apex and get the results you do. It's shocking.

Don't say I didn't tell you so!

I recently rented a car from the Auckland airport branch. The check out time was an hour this was too long especially for a short stay.

The really poor part was the car battery failed the next day. When I called them nobody said oh no how can we get you back on the road they said did you pay for the roadside cover. The first thing is they had my details I had given the details of my rental. Surely they could have looked. I had no idea but had paid what I thought was a full insurance. But no in the small print it says you have to pay a $90 call out fee. I was not happy. So I called the AA they were there in 10 minutes. What we discovered was a very very dirty engine and a battery older than 3 years. The call centre said I must have left something on. But I did not. AA confirmed this. If something had been left on it would have had to have had a lower battery charge than was found. They told me I needed to get the battery recharged over night.

So I called the call centre. Actually they were hopeless they pur me out to the Airport and Auckland branches and it rang for 10 minutes to each. No one picked up the phone. Finally I went back to the call centre who agreed they would give me another car and they had lots of people working on it. So I drove to the branch expecting I would sign new forms and give me the key. No such luck I was put back in the queue. I wasted over 2 hours and 9 calls trying to fix this.

They did give me a 50% discount but it completely ruined my plans for my short stay in Auckland and worse my only free day.

There are 36 rental car companies at the airport I recommend you try another one

Auckland Apex Rental in Auckland airport. Had booked about 2 months ago, for 2 nights. On arrival on a very hot humid day, found the information to getting across the pedestrian access to the waiting area all good., but had to wait 40 minutes for the shuttle to turn up. Driver apologised for wait, said the one before had filled up, so for me that was tough, as there are no seats to wait upon and with a disability it was really unpleasant. Finally got the trip to the depot, quite quickly there, but had to wait 30 minutes to get served. Lots of people running around behind the desks but only 2 on actually doing anything about taking the booking for the car. In the end, got a lady Christine, who became efficient, and did the job in about 5 minutes, however, showed us a car, and we took it because we were fed up with all the delays. Cobwebs on both mirrors, it was dirty inside and out, not like you would expect for getting into a so called professional rental car company. I hope never to need to hire from this company again. - once upon a time, ie about 3 years ago, it seemed good, but not now,., not good at all.

Very different experiences with Apex in the South and North Island.
While everything was perfect and smooth in both Queenstown and Christchurch, once we landed in Auckland all the issues began. We arrived with an internal flight from Christchurch, called the local Apex agency and they said they would send a shuttle to us within 20 minutes. We waited one hour until the shuttle showed up and the driver was very impolite - didn't even say hello or offered to help loading luggage. Then we arrived at the Apex agency and we were received by an unfriendly Indian lady, who didn't accept our Swiss driving licences (in spite of the the official translation provided by the Swiss Roads Office, which explains the meaning of each field in the document, and in spite of the fact that we wrote to Apex prior to our trip, with copies of all of our documents, and were told that they were acceptable in New Zealand). This very arrogant lady said it was a mistake that we were given a car in Queenstown in the first place and our documents were not approvable. Fortunately one of us also had a Canadian driving license, which she could not refuse and we got our car. The only positive note of the experience was the shuttle driver, who drove us to the airport today (11 March) after we dropped off the car!

Apex is the absolute worst. They completely ruined my trip to Auckland. My flight arrived at 1:30 pm. I stood by the shuttle area and watched two Apex vans drive by without stopping, despite me waving them down. I called Apex and they assured me a driver was on the way. 30 minutes later, he arrived.

I was shuttled to the apex depot. There were at least 10 people in line ahead of me and only 2 people working. Soon, both of them disappeared and NO ONE was working. It was 3pm and it appeared that was the end of their shift because they all clocked out and left. No one else had clocked in. We all stood in line with no one working until 3:15 when a new shift of people arrived. It was unreal.

I stood in line and wasn’t helped until 4:00. There was a screaming and kicking toddler behind me and there was NO WiFi, so I couldn’t even plan my trip while waiting.

I was finally helped and the agent had to call customer service because what they told me via email was incorrect and all the paperwork had to be redone. Meanwhile, an additional 20 people were in line behind me.

By the time I got into my car, it was 4:30. An entire 3 hours after began waiting for apex to pick me up.

I understand delays, but this was unacceptable. At least have WiFi So customers can entertain themselves.

I will never use or recommend apex. Use a better company like Go.

Have just returned a car to Apex after a 4 week rental involving pick up in Au ckland and drop off in Christchurch. I can't fault the experience. Had booked the car well in advance but pick up was swift and completely hassle free. The pre- booked Interislander ferry which was part of the deal made transfering to the South Island very easy and drop off in Christchurch took 2 minutes plus shuttle to our hotel. I had taken out the enhanced insurance so there was no issue over scratches or marks but still I was impressed by the hassle-free and efficient nature of the whole operation - and the 2013 Toyota Rav gave me no trouble at all

Both experiences were excellent: Not brand new but 3-4 year old cars, easy to drive (both automatic), much cheaper than the international brand names, good service, easy to increase our hire from 1 week to 2, no problems dropping off. We went for no excess, so paid extra for the peace of mind, but it was still good value.

Avoid like the plague! We hired a Toyota Corolla from the Auckland office in November 2017 for a planned 3 weeks. Although it had lots of dents and 180,000 km on the clock, we were assured it was a good car. After 2 weeks, whilst in Queenstown, an elderly lady reversed into us when we were stationery. She admitted full responsibility and gave us her insurance details. The damage was no worse than the existing dents on the car. I read the small print on the hire contract that required us to visit the nearest Apex office to register the accident. This took half a day out of our itinerary and the office demanded we paid 2000 NZD which would be refunded less the cost of repair. As we had excess CDW insurance in place and the lady had accepted full liability, we reluctantly agreed.
It is now 21st January 2018 and Apex Claims Department have not even had the decency to reply to the numerous emails sent by me and my insurance company who understandably require a repair invoice and assurance that they will not be making a claim against the lady's insurance company ( as they stated they would not be doing)
I suspect the car will not be worth repairing and that Apex do not even intend to repair it due to its age and condition..
The incident has caused a lot of stress to us and took the shine off a great holiday.

We recently returned from NZ and left the hire car after hours. Apex took $2000 out of my account and are saying to fill out a incident form for the small amount of damage on a front bumper but not really sure what damage as we returned the car just like we found it. It had too many marks to enter on the form as the guy was telling me so we believed him. His words were this is just wear and tear. But apart from all this it's the customer service we have received since calling 5 times and leaving our details and what we are calling about we have received no return phone calls. We have also sent emails but no returned emails.

My main problem happened when the car key snapped as I turned the lock in the door - the key batteries were flat so I had needed to manually open the door
I was stranded in a car park outside a supermarket, an hour from my accommodation at the Coromandel, with my 7 yo daughter.
After a few calls back and forth (boring details), I called Apex again stating that my phone battery was in the red and was told that they could get a key to me tomorrow
I said that this was not acceptable as i was in a car park with my daughter an hours drive from my accommodation
they asked me to wait, and I was left for 5 - 10 minutes listening to the staff laughing and joking among themselves
in the mean time i managed to use pliers i had bought at the supermarket to clamp the key back together and start the car
when Apex came back on the phone I told them i had started the car
they told me to drive to the Auckland office and pick up a new key
I told them that they would need to pay for my accommodation, as I had paid for my accommodation that night at the Corromandel
They refused to pay
I stated I was not happy with the service and would write a complaint
they stated 'Well that's fine, and things are about to get worse because you will need to pay for a new key'
I did manage to get the car to my accommodation, start it again and also get petrol and start it again (near my accommodation, just in case I couldn't start the car again)
I was told that the key would be waiting for me with the shuttle driver as i would arrive after hours
When I got there, no one knew about the key and they spent 10 minutes trying to find one for me
I felt that the staff on the phone did not care at all for my situation or wellbeing at all

We decided to book with APEX because we figured as a local company they would be a good choice and possible more affordable over the international companies. - How wrong we were.

we arrived at 1am in Auckland, and had reserved our car, and had the instructions from APEX for after hours pickup, which is offsite at the long term car park.
My wife, 2 kids, a number of bags, 1am - go to the offsite lot - NO CAR, sure they had the booking but forgot to leave the car.

Now I have to go back to the terminal, a wife, 2 kids, bags after a long flight, its 2.30am ish, domestic terminal closed, only Thrifty (no cars), Europecar (who wanted $180 per day) and Avis are open at the international terminal.
We book an avis car, its $300 more expensive than our APEX booking - but at least they have a car.

APEX pass my information onto their Auckland Airport Manager (Damion) who we never hear from.

When I go back to NZ, stay with the big guys (Avis, Hertz, Thrifty etc), at least they wont leave you stranded and more often than not followup with the customer. Avoid APEX...

Rude staff (both telephone and Auckland city branch), rear car tyre got flat a few days prior to returning it and had to pay for a brand new one even though it WASN'T MY FAULT. Had to call AA using my own callout allowance too. To save a few dollars we went with Apex. Went fine in Sydney. Went fine for a week in Auckland. Went fine for a week out of Christchurch ( overlooking the manky smell and wobbly tires). Little stuff. Totally ok. BUT on return to Auckland after calling ahead for a car, the third world manager cancelled our shuttle ride making us wait half an hour, then ignored us as we arrived at the counter and passed out keys to the two other customers, and finally said, "The computers are shut down. I cannot rent you a car." When my wife complained that we had arranged it by phone just a short time ago, he said, "I cannot listen to this - woman," and fled out the door. He clearly cancelled the car so he could leave early. Just cannot believe any company would place a man from a culture that clearly disrespects women in a customer service role.

Having hired Apex cars from Christchurch previously I was very happy to book in Auckland with this company. Having said that, from here on in the experiences were to be downhill.

Arriving at Auckland and waiting 45 minutes for the shuttle service was bellow average when market competitors had come a number of times over our waiting period. For those in a hurry this could be problematic. (fortunately we were not - however the couple waiting next to us had been waiting close to an hour).

Service was bearable and then we were introduced to our car. The car was still dirty with mud under the wheels and car body. Inside the car there was food crumbs from the previous person that had hired the vehicle - this is not an acceptable standard on its own right. Further inspection revealed that car had a pretty heavy chip on the windscreen, which could seriously become a travellers burden if the chip became a crack in which would need to be repaired - for me, I would not want to be spending my travel time repairing something that should have been amended previously.

Upon time to return the vehicle I had to drop off at an after hours facility, which is expected for some hire care companies. I had my hire car schedule to be returned at 6AM of which I had already paid all the appropriate fees and charges. Shortly after I received an email notifying me of an additional $30 charge for the early drop off, which had always been the case throughout the whole hiring process. - poor communication on there part.

Shortly after the first email I was notified of an additional $100 for excessive cleaning. Which given the fact the car did have dirt on it an some crumbs would be fair in most instances but to come from a company that leased a car that was so dirty inside and out I figured this was a poor form on their part.

Used previously, not using again.

Atleast the car was economical and had no mechanical fault

We hired a car from Nelson for a South island road trip, dropping off at ChCh over Xmas New Year. Really happy with the vehicle. Great price and never gave us an issue.

The check-in customer service is Nelson was the only negative. The transfer driver was great, but the check-in person was really unwelcoming, and clearly didn't want to work that day.

The ChCh checkout was a great customer service experience, including the transfer driver.

We found some important issues in the car we hire, some of them security related:

- the breaker were either worn-out or improper adjusted
- some of the wheels were close to their ending life
- the speed meter was wrong for almost 10 km/hrs (we could prove it using an app in our mobiles)
- the swipers didn't clean
- kids seat boosters were uncomfortable
- the car alarm didn't work
- the car had lots of dents, scratches, hits, chips. These made the car look bad
- the CUSTOMER SERVICE in Christchurch was terrible, rude attitude by miss Ivy Ding (who didn't want to tell us her name)

I don't recommend this company at all.

Very mixed experience. it started by having to wait more than 45min only to be then told that the translation of our drivers license is not accepted by APEX. We are holding a standardized EU license for more than 10 years and got an official English translation, which I requested from our government transportation department. But this was not good enough for this car rental agency. We then had to go to a local translation office, wait for 90min, pay 60 NZD/ license for a much worse and less comprehensive translation than the one we got from our government. This was just ridiculous and I recommend all people with drivers licenses from non English speaking countries to AVOID this car rental agency.
We finally got our car, which looked pretty banged up. While I was bit worried the big chip in the windscreen would further crack, the car eventually caused no issues on our trip from Auckland to Queenstown. so, that's a positive! Ferry ticket was organized by Apex and it was pretty convenient that we could take the same car to the South Island. Handover in Queenstown was quick and with no issues - and left me with the impression the Queenstown team might would have been friendlier and more accommodating than the team in Auckland.

Apex took the $2800 deductible off my credit card instantly, and seven weeks later I'm still fighting to get it back even though I know the driver's insurance has approved the claim. The one person in all of Australia and NZ who deals with such matters is now on holiday. He was unhelpful when he was in the office ("it's our policy" and "no guarantee you'll get it back"), and the person who I just asked to help me in his absence made a good effort at palming me off too. I rented a "Roadtrip Special"-cheapest price with 0 excess. A not too small car to drive from point A to point B. After checking other rental companies (average rating 80+ & "irrelevant" for me complaints) I chose the Apex Rentals.
As for car condition - 9+ No complaints! Value for the money!
I've got Nissan Sunny, ~2002-4 that did excellent job for task. The car was in norm cond'. Clean, tires in good cond', brakes not worn out, lights OK, no mp3. I wasn't looking for economic car but yet sunny was OK for me (~ 14-15 km/l on intercity road). I traveled all over the south island and had no slowness while driving on mountains roads.
I had a problem with a car in Nelson- a stone got into breaking system. Called Apex Customer Service and they sent me to car service in Nelson. 1 hour and I had my car back.
I gave a 7/10 because I encountered something strange in Queenstown Apex office. They refused to give me a car unless I "TRANSLATE" my driving license. I have an international license: in English, all necessary info is mapped according to internationally accepted standard (1-name, 2-last name, 3-birth day, 4a-issue date etc..). See on internet. I know for sure it is not only me because some Swiss girl had exactly same problem same time. She told to representative that rented a car in Wellington w/o any translation.
In ANY other Apex department you get a car W/O TRANSLATING it! My friend (we traveled together) rented a car from Apex (as well) in Auckland W/O translating his license. Many other travelers I met in NZ, got cars (other companies) w/o translation.
To be honest I wanted to rate less but some of the office workers were really helpful. After I translated a driving license (for 90 NZD) I've got a car with manual transmission, my fault, forgot to specify "automatic" in preorder form. They changed a car next day w/o any fees.At the day of arrival, was already end of day, local worker took me and Swiss girl from Queenstown airport to city center. Thanks for that!

Our family (me, my wife and our two kids, 6 and 2 years old) rented a Toyota Rav4 for 7 days, and although the car itself was great and easy to drive and never caused us any trouble, the terribly outdated booster seat and child seat for our children lowered our rating of Apex rental cars with a few points. It felt terrible to put our children in some god forsaken seats from the early nineties! Luckily nothing happened while driving the car. When searching the internet for good car rental companies on New Zealand it was hard to find any reviews at all considering children safety in the car. Now we know the hard way that Apex rental cars isn't a good choice when travelling with kids. Any families with small children looking for a car to rent on New Zealand, heed our warning! Message to Apex rental cars: please update your booster and child seats now or lose the families to other car rental companies! I would rate the car itself a 9 or 10, but the child/booster seats aren't worth more than a 3, hence the overall rating of 6.

Their prices were very competitive , the all inclusive insurance was reasonably priced and comprehensive. We were picked up from Christchurch airport by a very friendly driver and taken to their premises, just a few minutes away. It took less than five minutes to complete the paperwork and have the keys - the service was exceptionally efficient, no hard sell and a very clean, recent model Ford Focus to drive. The worst experience ever!!!! No one answered the after hours phone. Instead we were told by an automated message to call back in business hours. We were stranded at Auckland airport at 1am with a 20 month old and no baby car seat. Very upset we had to transport our son in an unsafe way but had no choice. Had to pay over $100 in cab fees to get to where we were staying. The next day when we explained what had happened the office staff insinuated that we must have called the wrong number which we confirmed we had the correct after hours number. No one would help us with our complaint. We were given the Operations Managers number (Nicole) and tried unsuccessfully to email and phone Nicole for 8 days. She ignored all of our messages. Then on Christmas Eve we finally managed to speak with the Reservations Manager (tony) who seemed to listen and asked us to email him through the times of which we tried to call to pass onto Nicole. We were told we would hear something on Boxing Day. We heard nothing!! Rang Tony back on the last day of our holiday and he refused to speak with me!!!!!! Unbelievable. Then finally after being very firm with the girl we were speaking with spoke with the Manager of Apex (Derek) who refunded our after hours fee and 1 day car hire after saying there is no such message asking people to call back in business hours. Well there certainly is Derek so best you get that fixed!!!! All up the shonkiest car rental place I have ever come across and when back in NZ will NOT be using them. Worst service ever. We picked up our car from Queenstown Airport on Dec 3, 2013, and returned the car at Christchurch Airport at 4.45am Dec 13, 2013. Drop-off was off office hour, so we paid $25 extra for the return and for the shuttle bus to take us from their parking lot to the airport that morning.

Everything went well at first. We called again the day before returning our car to make sure somebody will be at the Christchurch branch at 4.45am and there would be a shuttle bus to take us to the airport (Apex is usually further away from the airport to justify its lower price compared to other American rental companies). Someone answered the phone saying there'll be their staff when I return my car.

Deeply to my disappointment, we got to Apex Christchurch branch at 4.30am and waited for 30 minutes and nobody showed up or picked up our phone. We called Apex hotline for more than a dozen times and left multiple voice messages. We were extremely worried we were gonna miss our flight to Auckland and a connecting flight back to Hong Kong. Luckily the parking lot about 1km from Apex was open at that time and they offered to take us to the airport. However, Apex don't pay them and they couldn't hold the key to the car we left outside Apex's gate, and so we kept the key so that someone can pick it up from Auckland airport when we wait for the next flight.

When we arrived at Auckland airport, we called Apex Auckland after 8am so that they can send someone to pick up the key. I thought this was a gentle gesture to make their job easier (otherwise I may have to mail it back from Hong Kong). HOWEVER, when a lady at the Auckland branch answered my call, she blamed me saying "we are only open at 8am, why did you not leave the key in the car?", and totally ignored my grievance of nearly missing my flight only because of Apex's fault, and the fact that I paid extra to arrange the early morning drop-off. What an attitude, rarely seen in a large company in any part of the developed world.

Apex Rental Cars responds:

I am sorry that you were not able to return your vehicle as per the instructions that we supplied to you

Unfortunately, I am not sure how we could have done any better for you

I have here in front of me a copy of the contract that you signed at Queenstown Airport - the entire back page of the the contract is devoted to ensuring that you have clear instructions as to how to return the car. Unfortunately I can't post it on this site.

In your case the contract states:

"*Please return the vehicle to Airpark Canterbury17-25 Logistics Drive and they will transfer you to the terminal five minutes away.*" - The rest of the A4 sheet is taken up with a large map showing the precise location of logistics drive and Airpark Canterbury.

When you uplifted the car, the return arrangements were specifically discussed with you - after signature, the contract was turned over and the map and return location was pointed out to you. You will note that the asterixes on your copy of the instructions are hand written in pen - we ask our CSRs to do this to show that they have indeed specifically discussed the return instructions with you

You will no doubt have a copy of this contract and I invite you to check for yourself. (It is probably asking a bit much that after checking your contract, you might give some thought as to whether your above post on this site and others is actually fair and reasonable)

As to parking the car in a position so as to block one of our depot gates and then taking the car key to Auckland Airport - well you can imagine how that went down at the peak of the Christmas season...

Maps they gave were also easier to fold and use than Jason's or AA's tour maps (but if you must, pick up the AA maps at the I-centers, as they are very nice)

Additionally, they provided a free sim card (2-degrees) for your mobile phone. You can then call and "top up" to get usable minutes or texts; however, all but their Greymouth location has a free-phone #. Just make sure you have an unlocked mobile phone to use.

Only one minor point - we've had 4x4s with you the last two bookings and this time it seemed a bit small for four adults - Subaru Forrester. Had a Rav4 previously, which was higher off of the ground (important, because one of our group of four adults is registered disabled and struggles a bit with getting into vehicles - the higher the better), and even though I emailed with a request for the biggest option possible we ended up with the Forrester. Chap collecting his 4x4 just before us got the bigger car - must've been just bad luck! All in all though, wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

I have used this company over 10 times now - always courteous, reliable, friendly etc. The cars are always good - even the budget ones. Pick up from airport very easy and you are out of the office within minutes. I have tried many different companies before finding Apex - this is one of the most reasonably priced ( especially when you include insurance rates) and problem free of them. I had to change my dates several times - never a problem. Now all they need is a loyalty card !

Used Apex to use a car for a few days away, picking up the vehicle in Nelson and returning to Picton. Easy pick-up and return; I also wanted to extend the loan period after the initial booking, and that was completed quickly and easily too. Great customer service: the car picked up a stone chip on the windscreen and when I stopped at the nearest office, the staff were great in assisting. Thanks!

We had a excellent car from these people, pickup from Christchurch airport was quick, car was great value and exactly what we expected. When we got stuck in Queenstown in the snow with no chains(my fault ,I didnt think we would need them) one of their crew brought them to the hotel for us, great service. Will be using them next year when we come back.

Apex Rental Cars responds:

Thank you for your review Guy, I hope you enjoyed your visit to NZ.

On price, we think our cars represent good value when compared with any of our competitors. When making the comparison we think it is important to consider the make, model and age of the vehicle, the insurance conditions including the excess and take account of any extra charges, which are common in the industry. We try to keep our pricing simple and straightforward and describe the vehicles accuratly on our website. We might not always be the cheapest, but you can book with us and feel confident that the car you drive away will be as described on the website.

I had reservations (excuse the pun) about hiring a car from a company I didn't know - I usually hire from the bigger, global people but never again. Apex made everything easy from initial contact right through to dropping off the car - everything worked like a dream. They didn't even add a charge for our 22yr old son as a named driver. The car was spacious (Camray) and reliable and we would never hesitate in using or recommending Apex again.

Hired a Camry for 2 weeks in August/September 2008 and the whole experience from original emails to the final drop-off was nothing but perfect. Email responses to questions were fast, they were prompt when they picked me up from the motel in the morning and the car was in excellent condition. They even made sure our drop off at the airport was easy. I would recommend this company to anyone and will definately use them again for our next holiday in NZ this year. Also, price was very competitive.

When I called from Australia (yay 1800# in Aus to make a res for NZ!!!) the agent on the phone was beyond helpful, especially since I was doing a number of car hires during the summer hols. After sorting out my longest hire, I threw caution to the wind and asked about a short hire from Picton to Greymouth, two smaller stops. Talk about helpful! Since I had booked a long hire, the agent just coupled it together, so I didn't have to pay any extra charges for the short hire during the busy season. They were my last hire during my travels and I would def. use them again on my return! Oh, and cars were great too:-).
