Quite pricey, we had really horrible weather and the sea was not great, but we didn't have much choice but to go as they were operating and we'd already paid. The staff who handed out the wetsuits kept giving wrong sizes and even after we asked for a specific size they gave a different one that what we'd asked for, so suiting up wasn't a pleasant experience. I wasn't able to complete the swim as it was way too much for me and the waves were shocking. They did however refund my money and charge me a spectator rate. I think this would be a really wonderful experience in good weather, so I suggest you plan your swim around the weather.

Very well organised company: great location, easy to find, lots of parking space available. Literally everything is taken care of, from a dry wetsuit to anti fog spray and hot showers. Once in a lifetime experience, but do not forget to bring your sea sickness pills because you really need them when the sea is a bit rough. It might seem a bit expensive but it is truly worth the money!

We heard a lot about this and went in with high hopes. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to swim with the dolphins because of a rather silly procedure. When you register, you have to fill in a form indicating your swimming abilities, among other questions. The question asked how confident we were in our swimming abilities, and being on the conservative side and unaware of how conditions may be out in the open sea, we indicated that we were not confident of our swimming abilities even though we can swim. We were under the impression that if we chose this option, the crew would just give us more attention which wasn't a bad thing.

However, as the sea conditions weren't too optimal that day, the staff at the registration counter didn't allow us to swim, citing that we indicated we weren't strong swimmers. We argued that we were just being cautious. It also seemed very arbitrary and subjective, if we had indicated we were strong swimmers, we would be allowed to swim with no questions asked. As they have no way of really determining everyone's swimming ability, who's to say just because I state I'm a strong swimmer means I'm really one? Despite our pleas, they wouldn’t let us swim, and we had to switch to watching the dolphins instead.

While I fully understand the operator's need to take precautions, I don't agree with their method of sieving out those who "can" swim from those who "can't". Instead, the questions asked should have been more factual, such as whether you can swim unaided under certain kinds of conditions. Whether I'm a confident swimmer or not really doesn't say much about your actual swimming abilities. When we saw the other people allowed for the swim option, some really weren't "strong" swimmers as they had claimed, and we felt we were definitely on par if not better poised to handle the sea condition at that time.

While it was disappointing to be unable to go into the water, seeing the dolphins out in the wild did somewhat make up for it.

A brilliant trip, one of my favourite things in New Zealand. we went on the 8.30 trip and at first when you are having your safety briefing there seems to be a lot of people, but don't worry. They pop you on a bus after you get your wet suit and have had your briefing and then when you get to the harbour you get split up on to smaller boats. We were on a boat of 14 swimmers, the other boats were barely near us when we were with the dolphins, so you didn't notice them. We swam in a pod of about 300 dolphins and at one point the whole pod seemed to swim past us, many only inches away from me! Amazing trip and really well done

This was an amazing experience. All of the equipment provided helped to keep us warm in the cold seas, and it was really amazing to see the dolphins less than a foot away in their natural environment. The dolphins were pretty playful and the guides taught you how to interact with them to get the most out of your experience. The guides provided a commentary whilst you were sailing out to the dolphins and then once finished swimming, we were taken to a seal colony, which was a nice, unexpected part of the trip.

I expected to see maybe 20 dolphins, but in actual fact, we saw over 500 dusky dolphins in just a few hours!!

An amazing experience, I would recommend it to anyone... my only problem was that the sea was cold!!!

My girlfriend wanted to swim with dolphins, so I had to join ;) Dolphin Encounter is extremely well organized, with a video introduction, professional swimming gear and also heaps of participants (even in the low peak season).

The number of people joining the swimming trip bothered me in the beginning, but when you are in the water and you really get the opportunity to swim and play with these wild dolphins I forgot all other participants and had the best wildlife experience in my life. Dusky dolphins like to play and Kaikoura is definitely the place to do so!

The guides were extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I was extremely impressed with how much they care about the dolphins and the environment. On the way in, the Captain did a u-turn to pick up some trash in the water. We swam with heaps of dolphins... there must have been hundreds. We got three swims in... I don't know how long each one was as I was too busy with the dolphins. I would say that if traveling to NZ, do not pass up this opportunity. A great operator who do everything you can to get you the best experience of swimming with dolphins.
The equipment for swimming and the boat were new and of high quality. A lot of time and effort went into making sure things fitted and that we knew how to use our snorkels, masks etc.
We swam with a pod of 400 dolphins 3 times, the boat moving us into the middle of the pod each time it began to move away.
Whilst on the boat we were well looked after, with hot chocolate and ginger biscuits and the skipper was exceptional at spotting and explaining other local wildlife including albatrosses, seals, sharks and other birds.
This was an unforgettable experience, a real highlight of our month in NZ.

We were initially booked for a viewing only as no swimming opportunities were open. However, we gave our number and we were called with a cancellation for an early trip with the ability to swim with the dolphins.

It was fantastic - we loved that the dolphins were wild. There must have been 350 of them. We got in and out of the water 3 times - following them - so that we could get the most out of the experience. This is definitely a company that cares about you getting the most out of it. Once we had been in the water three times, we went and followed the dolphins for a bit so that we could take pictures.

It was one of the highlights of our trip. The company itself is well equipped. Their staff are well informed and knowledgeable about the area, geography, and wildlife.

It was a true pleasure!

Trip at 5.30am was well worth getting up for. Fab sunrise + 2 very enthusiastic guides. 3 dolphin swims + tracked them for 1/2 hour. Total tour time at 4 hours.
