We stayed here and found it suited us very well. The sky on the clear night we stayed was the most amazing night experience of our trip. Toilet was a bonus.

Lots of space, very close to Tekapo, has a toilet. A little noisy as close to main road. A popular spot and quite exposed, so expect campers to turn up late at night. Otherwise clean and tidy.

I didnt notice any self-contained vehicle sign, seems to me it is open to any vehicle. The camp site name on Google Maps is Mackenzie Waitaki RV Camping.
Clean, toilet clean, picnic tables, very windy.

Good place to camp for free! Big area, and close to town. There was a toilet but I didn’t use it so can’t give review on that. There’s a picnic table too.

Stayed for 2 nights. Was a great spot for free. Clean long drop toilets but no running water or sinks. Road noise wasn’t an issue. Get a great view of the night sky on a clear night too

Excellent basic freedom camping spot. Tons of room, very little road noise after dark, great views of the ranges.

A lot of level areas and very easy to find - just off SH8. Highly recommend for an overnight stay.

Only a few minutes outside of Tekapo this site was easily accessible for our 7m camper van and could even cater to much larger. Great views of the surrounding hills to the north and east. Road noise is fairly quiet and did not disturb. Great spot for some star gazing as well. Toilet was clean and tidy.

Picnic area alongside road. Flat, good toilet, a couple of picnic tables (one with a small shelter), tents permitted, no self-contained requirement. Some road noise. 6-7 min drive to Tekapo.

Great little spot to camp over night. 10 minutes from tekapo has 2 picnic tables and a long drop toilet. We shared this spot with 5 other campers there is road noise as it is next to the road. The only let down would be how exposed it is to the road and the wind. Was very windy.

For a free spot, it was amazing!!! It has a very clean toilet and 2 picnic tables. A lot of space to park. Beautiful view of the mountains. Close to the road, but it wasn't a problem for me. I totally recommend this place!

Easy to find, just off the main road but there wasnt that much traffic at night. A clean long drop toilet. It felt a little exposed with just a few trees and 4 other vans turned up. The most amazing thing is the stars - no light polution at all - stunning.

Good place with benches and a toilet, but really noisy because it’s next to a big street.

Basic campground. Tough to find off the highway. For certified self contained vehicles only. A park ranger came over at around 7pm seeing if everyone was certified. Everyone who wasn’t she told them they had to leave. We were self contained but weren’t sure if we had all the certifications because we were renting and she said it was fine with her but other rangers in other places may have an issue. Has drop toilets and that’s it. Close to the highway so a bit of noise at night. Will get relatively busy during peak periods
