We were here late April and it was extremely cold even with a gas heater. However the sunset was stunning as were the mountain views and the surrounding trees had autumn colours. So if you are geared up for colder weather well worth it.

Awesome spot. Clean long drop toilet. Heaps of space. Nice views opposite the road. Next to a little creek. Was a couple of overnighters with us. Have to take rubbish with you but all in all a great experience. You get the odd truck rolling by at night but didn’t bother us at all. Would come back again.

Wanted to check out Tekapo the next day otherwise would probably have skipped this spot and headed for the much more scenic Lake Pukaki. There was plenty of space and a good toilet however a bit short on ambience and shelter. Camping 'ambassador' drove around in the evening obviously checking compliance.

Good size spot, close to Lake Tekapo (6min drive). Nice scenery surrounded by mountains. Clean toilet (long drop). Two picnic tables, one with covering. Close to the road so expect road noise.

We stayed here and found it suited us very well. The sky on the clear night we stayed was the most amazing night experience of our trip. Toilet was a bonus.

Lots of space, very close to Tekapo, has a toilet. A little noisy as close to main road. A popular spot and quite exposed, so expect campers to turn up late at night. Otherwise clean and tidy.

I didnt notice any self-contained vehicle sign, seems to me it is open to any vehicle. The camp site name on Google Maps is Mackenzie Waitaki RV Camping.
Clean, toilet clean, picnic tables, very windy.

Good place to camp for free! Big area, and close to town. There was a toilet but I didn’t use it so can’t give review on that. There’s a picnic table too.

Stayed for 2 nights. Was a great spot for free. Clean long drop toilets but no running water or sinks. Road noise wasn’t an issue. Get a great view of the night sky on a clear night too

Excellent basic freedom camping spot. Tons of room, very little road noise after dark, great views of the ranges.
A lot of level areas and very easy to find - just off SH8. Highly recommend for an overnight stay.

Only a few minutes outside of Tekapo this site was easily accessible for our 7m camper van and could even cater to much larger. Great views of the surrounding hills to the north and east. Road noise is fairly quiet and did not disturb. Great spot for some star gazing as well. Toilet was clean and tidy.

Picnic area alongside road. Flat, good toilet, a couple of picnic tables (one with a small shelter), tents permitted, no self-contained requirement. Some road noise. 6-7 min drive to Tekapo.
