Booking necessary through DOC. Excellent native bird/wildlife reserve. A few different companies provide service. All good.

A pre-arranged permit is required ($8) to visit the Kapiti Island bird reserve. Kapiti Tours is a charter boat company and can take you out to the designated harbour. Could be tricky if you are keeping to a tight schedule, as the boat will not go out on a rocky/windy day. The boat is tiny and I don't know why they dont get saomething bigger. Never the less, if you can get there it is like nothing you have ever seen.

Brillian Boat Trip. I had great confidence in the man running the show and driving the boat. Love the fact that you get on the boat in the car park and it is driven into the water by the huge tractor. Also loved the end journey where he just drove the boat onto the trailer and the tractor just pulled us out of the water. So no wet feet!!! Weather was soooooooooo good too!

had great confidence in the ferryman as he seemed to be perfect for the job and thoroughly experienced. not his fault when the waves got big and the water splashed in a bit! any delays in timings were probably due to the passengers' quirks rather than his. only slight problem for me was twice getting an answerphone first thing on the day of sailing - we were told to phone in and i was left not being too sure if we had pressed all the buttons.

Fantastic reserve, only a limited number of permits. Boat company is very friendly, relaxed and well organised. Nice experience.
