Its very tiring driving a big van all over New Zealand. Pick some top things to do and stay in a few places for a while. Maybe mix the transport modes to get around easier. We've got 6 weeks this time and its not enough. Next time I'd stay in South Island and pick 3-4 areas to get into.

Hire a campervan so you are in control of your itinerary (and can be flexible).

Extended family trip, we hired 2 X 6 berth Riviera Motorhomes. The service we received from the very1st email was impeccable. These people were very obliging and nothing was a problem to them. The only "problem" was due to some dirty gas which caused a big area of sooty like stuff on the outside of the vehicle. However, it caused no inconvenience during the trip.. The vehicles were spotless & well equipped.
Price was extremely competitive, I did some extensive shopping around. What sold it for me, was the fact that Kiwi Autohomes only required credit card imprint for the security, not like some companies who at the commencement of hire, debit credit cards up to $5000.
Looking forward to another trip soon, will be in touch.

This company almost managed to ruin our NZ holiday. Arriving in Christchurch to pick up our van, we were told that there was an electrical problem but we would be given another one instead. Ok, fine with us. Then we were told that they wanted to switch the vans back again when they had repaired the other one. Hmmmm. We certainly didn't want to be dependent on meeting up with them. Our NZ holdiay had exactly no travel plan - which was what we wanted. I told them that since we were visiting from europe and roaming charges on our mobiels were expensive, that we would only be turning them on every other day. So if they left a message, it might be a couple of days before we answered. Sure enough, they left a mesage. When we picked it up 2 days later, they had left 2 more messages, threatening to set the police on us for stealing the camper! I called and told them to go to hell. Sic the police on us if they wanted. We met then a week later and switched vans. Still damned impolite!

Never, Ever, Ever rent from Kiwi Autohomes!

Well well well, as a company with over 35 years experience in the Rental motorhome industry we are expected to have at least one problem client. Yes the vehicle we orignally had booked for this client had a last minute electrical problem which took a couple of days to source parts for. Instead of offering our client a motel room for the first couple of nights we upgraded him to one our luxury 2/3 berth motorhomes for use until we had the budget 2/3 berth he had requested repaired for him. We explained that the vehicle we had allowed him to use was due to go out on hire to another client in 4 days time. It took 3.5 days to get in contact with this gentleman. The final message we left for him was that the police would be notified so that if they did find him they could instruct him to get in contact with us. We after all have a free phone number here which he could call that would cost him nothing. At no point and time was he ever disrupted from his holiday. We got the original vehicle fixed and arranged to meet in Kiakoura. This meeting point was arranged by him with no alteration to his plans at all. Once our staff arrived he proceeded to verbally abuse one our staff members to a point where his wife told him to shut up. This gentleman also had problems with the camper which he rung through to our Christchurch depot at 10.30 pm again full of abuse and the conversation ending with him slamming the phone down. Our staff went to his site and found nothing wrong with the camper at all. It was all user error. In another phone conversation with this gentleman he threatened to shove the vehicle somewhere. He calls us damned impolite.

When the vehicle was returned to Auckland these clients were as nice as pie had a couple of small issues with the camper which they brought to our attention which we have now rectified.

It is a good thing that we dont get to many of this type of client coming to our beautiful Country.
